

Joseph Lopes, 84, with family members by his side, entered into eternal peace in the comfort of his home in Copperas Cove, Texas on September 12, 2014. Joseph was born in Hempstead, NY on May 20, 1930, to the late Manuel and Rosie Dalvina Lopes. He is preceded in death by siblings, Joe & Frank Ferreira, Mary Green, and Dominga Mills.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Julia, his brother Adelino and their six children Deborah, Rosemarie, Joseph Jr., Peter, Paul, Stephen, and twelve grandchildren; Brandyn, Dayna, Benjamin , Adam , Michael, Heather, Stephanie, Elise ,Daniel, Emma, Mercedez and Colby.
Joseph married his sweetheart Julia Mae Fontes on June 25, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, RI, where they raised all six children until building his family’s dream home and moving to Little Compton, RI. After 30+ years of dedicated service to the U.S. Naval Base in Newport, RI, as an Auto Body Repair Technician, “Joe” retired in 1993. He continued to work for the Newport Hospital as a security guard for 10+ years, as well as, pursuing his hobby of restoring vintage vehicles and traveling around the country spending time with family and friends.
Joseph was best known for his love and dedication to his family. He exemplified honesty, integrity, sacrifice, and faithfulness in all he did. Joe believed in making decisions based on concrete facts rather than opinion and believed in giving people the benefit of the doubt. He embodied a quiet spirit and a witty sense of humor that will be missed by so many. Joseph was a faithful member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove, TX where he served as an usher for nearly a decade. Joe remained very active in his local community serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as being a member of the Copperas Cove Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association.
The Lopes Family held a service on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 5-7 PM at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, located ar 211 E. Ave B, Copperas
Cove, TX. A Mass Service was also held at the Holy Family Catholic Church located at 1001 Georgetown Rd., Copperas Cove, TX on Friday
September 26, 2014 at 10AM. Joseph will be laid to rest at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Wareham, Massachusetts on November 12th at 10:30AM.
