Penny was born on July 4, 1956, in Waynesboro, PA, to the late B. Richard and Sally Jean (Whitmore) Bakner. She was the middle child of seven.
Penny attended Waynesboro Area Senior High School and later earned her GED. She helped raise three children with her ex-husband while they traveled during his service in the Army, living in Germany, Texas, and Kentucky during various duty stations.
Penny became a bit of a nomad over the years, traveling to California to visit her longtime friends, the Grants, to Florida to spend time with family, and frequently back and forth between Pennsylvania and Texas. For the past eight years, she made her home in Texas, where she settled with her daughter's family.
Penny enjoyed gardening when she could, reading, mushroom hunting with her sisters and other family members, and spending time with family and friends. She especially cherished time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. Penny loved cooking for and with her grandsons and great-grandson, creating many special memories in the kitchen and at the table.
Penny is survived by her daughter, Johnelle (Rob) Douglas of Copperas Cove, TX; her sons, John Rhines III of Kempner, TX, and Jason Rhines of Fayetteville, PA. She is also survived by her six grandsons: Michael (Alyssa) Gee of Kempner, TX; Robert (Erin) Douglas III of Columbia, SC; Benjamin Douglas and Andrew Douglas, both of Copperas Cove, TX; Kurtlin Rhines of Waynesboro, PA; and Colier Rhines of Shippensburg, PA.
She is further survived by her great-grandson, Aidyn Douglas of Columbia, SC; her sisters, Victoria (Pean) Flagle and Donna Webster, both of Waynesboro, PA; and her brother, David Bakner of Waynesboro, PA, as well as several aunts, uncles, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dennis Bakner and Robert (Pamela) Bakner; her grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
Penny was well loved and will be greatly missed by many. I love you, Mommy.
Penny will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
