It was with great sorrow that I heard of Cliff’s passing.  He was a great gentleman and awesome story teller. He will be missed!

I moved to USA in 1997 and Cliff quickly became my closet North American relative!   I visited him whenever I was in Toronto and he made a trip to see me in NYC.  We both had flying and F1 in common, so there was no shortage of things to chat to Cliff about - conversations I always loved and enjoyed.   I had the great honor of taking him flying in a C172 over Manhattan, which is something I'll never forget.     The last time I saw him was in 2019 at the Montreal Grand Prix and will always treasure this picture.   You will be missed Cliff.   Fair winds and following seas.

It is with a very saddened and heavy heart that the Mumby family mourns the passing of Cliff. Cliff joined the RCAF the same time as my father, George Mumby, and upon receiving their wings they were paired together with Cliff being the navigator and my Dad as pilot on the CF100 - assigned to  440 squadron in Germany. Their exploits were legendary, including flying the alert mission on the night of the erection of the Berlin Wall, as well as infamous, including many stories young men in the military partake in (of which Cliff shared with me), which require discretion! 

He was also Taylor’s Godfather.

I connected with Cliff years ago after reading an article about how he had organised for the 440 squadron crest to be placed in the RAF Club, which he dedicated to my father. 

After contacting him, we became great friends and he connected himself with all of my family.

Every trip, family event, celebration, very sad passing, Cliff would comment on. We spoke every Christmas, where he would tell me stories about his adventures with my Dad, and how proud he was of his family. 

Vale Cliff. You were more than a friend of my father -  you were the Uncle every one deserves. 

No doubt the Officers Mess in heaven is busy with you and Dad and the rest of your squadron mates having a long deserved drinking session. 

Both Alisia and I , and all my family  will miss you.

I just learned that my dear friend Clifford has left this world. I have carried this friendship  within me since we were each other’s first sweet hearts. Cliff was 17 and I was 14. He took me to his prom at West Hill High and I took him to  our  family cottage at Meech Lake.  We went  our separate ways with occasional e-mail encounters  until  his life was shrouded in grief and sadness.   Once the move to Cornwall happened, his recovery was underway.  Clifford  was so kind and supportive to my Maya helping her throughout her PhD studies. That was  the Clifford Cassidy I always remembered: kind, loving, compassionate, intelligent and so very generous. How very sad for his family to have  lost him, but how wonderful  to have  Clifford in their midst for so long.   Blessings to them all.  Claire

With great sadness that we hear of his passing.  The Cassidy family is dear to our hearts. Thinking of everyone in this time.

Today I learned of the passing of my dad’s flight navigator—nearly 50 years after my dad passed away. Over the years, he kept my dad’s spirit alive through his stories, kindness, and thoughtful heart.

He was a remarkable man who never forgot the bond they shared in the skies. His stories brought me closer to a father I lost too soon, and for that, I will always be grateful.

In Grandpa Cliffs own words.... 
The photo was made in the summer of 1961, standing outside London’s Regent Palace Hotel at Piccadilly Circus. The hotel no longer exists, unfortunately. The participants include (l to r). George Mumby, Al Devitt, Cliff Cassidy, Bob Sears. The reason for being in London was to collect a tent that our 440 AW(F) Squadron flight commander, Doug Brown, had ordered for his 3Wing base Boy Scout troop.  It seemed reasonable to fly four CF100s to RAF Manston on the south coast of England, then take the train to London, pick up the tent and reverse the sequence to get back to Zweibrucken, our home base in Germany’s Saar valley. 
It also seemed reasonable for the four of us to buy “bowlers & brollies” to match the Fleet Street  image we had of 1960s London. Hence the photo, made following an afternoon of beer and Drambuie in the pub across the road from the hotel.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Clifford. Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.

Clifford's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His kindness, strength, and presence made a lasting impact, and he will be truly missed.
