Eric Robert McCartney

Peacefully with his family by his side, on Saturday July 17, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre; age 95 years.

Born on April 3, 1926 in Ormstown, Québec, it was on his family’s farm that Eric acquired his love of farming. At the young age of 16 he travelled to Alberta to harvest crops on the Canadian prairies and to British Columbia where he worked at a paper mill in Ocean Falls. When he returned to Québec, he apprenticed and studied to become an electrician. Employed in his trade, he worked in Cornwall, Ontario for Dominion Tape, Morbern Industries, Courtaulds, as well as for the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project installing turbines. During the construction of the Seaway International Bridge, Eric was employed as a stationary engineer installing the bridge support piers, some of which remain today. His passion for farming was never far away and in the 1960s he found time to manage his own farm for nearly 10 years.

Eric was a beloved husband and best friend for 69 years, of Lois (nee Tinkess). Loving father of Carey (Angele), and Donna Kirkey (Christopher). Cherished grandfather of Christian-Scott (Hilary), Chanel (James), Mackenzie, Cameron, and Caroline. Will be sadly missed by his sister Marjorie Defoe (the late Garth). Predeceased by his parents William James and Jean (Jeannie) McCartney. Also predeceased by his brothers and sisters David (Ruth) McCartney, Everett (Cathy) McCartney, Ruby Bott (Willis), Grace Long (Gerald), and Laura MacDonald (Jack). Will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews. Family in attendance at Lahaie and Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Homes, 20 Seventh Street West Branch (613-932-8482), on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021, from 11:30am-1pm. A Memorial Service will be held in the West Branch Chapel at 1pm, followed by internment at Paul’s Hill Cemetery in Avonmore. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be able to accommodate the first 50 people who arrive for the Memorial Service in the chapel.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, or Carefor Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Messages of condolences may be left at

\In Memory
A thousand times we thought of you , a thousand times we cried,
if love alone could have saved you , you never would have died,
a heart of gold stopped beating, two twinkling eyes closed to rest,
God broke our hearts to prove he only took the best, Never a day goes by that you aren't in our hearts … until we meet again .
