Loving husband and best friend of 33 years to Andrea Major. Cherished companion and fur dad to many fur babies. Treasured brother of: Larry Gareau (Elaine), Patricia St. Pierre (Jean), Deborah Charlebois (Yvon), Katherine Ann Chatterton (Gary Dexter), and Gayle Reichwein; and brother-in-law of: Laurette McDonald (late Robert), Adelarde Major (Gail) and Andre Major (Louise).
He will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
John is predeceased by his parents Jean-Guy Gareau and Gladys Ryan.
John was born and raised on the family farm in Glengarry where he learned strong work ethics and family values. When John headed off to school, he discovered his love of learning. Along with high school friends he spent summers in the tobacco fields of Western Ontario. He then decided that he preferred learning and working with pen and paper. After graduating from Char Lan, he headed to Toronto to continue his studies and begin his career in accounting. John became a Chartered Accountant and spent thirty-five years in private practice. He then held the position of Treasurer and Director of Finance with North Dundas Township for over twenty years where he was very much admired and appreciated, “as a deeply committed employee.” John was an exemplary teacher and mentor. He spent forty-four years teaching accounting courses at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall. Many of his students excelled under his guidance and mentorship. He assisted countless students with ongoing learning and in securing careers in the accounting field. His love and interest in muscle cars took up any leisure time he had. With Andrea, his #1 assistant by his side, his cars won medals and trophies at many car shows.
Thank you to the Welch family for their strong support for many years during tax season.
