William "Bill" Francis Costello

3 April, 19327 July, 2020

An honest man here lies at rest As e'er God with his image blest; The friend of man, the friend of truth, The friend of age, and guide of youth: Few hearts like his, with virtue warm'd, Few heads with knowledge so informed: If there's another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this Robert Burns

After a full and meaningful life, at the age of 88, William (Bill) Francis Costello died the afternoon of July 7 2020, supported in loving care by the wonderful nurses on the third floor of Glen Stor Dun Lodge, his home for the last 11 months. Bill departed this world much as he lived his life, with dignity and compassion.

Bill immigrated to Canada from his beloved Scottish homeland with his wife, soul mate, and true love, Myra (nee Fitzsimmons). Bill made Canada home through 65 years of marriage, raising two daughters, Pauline (Ron), Katrina (Gene) and chosen daughter Elizabeth Loney. Bill took pride in the lives and accomplishments of his grandchildren Leonard Costello Smith (Leah Travis), Duncan Costello Smith (Anna Snyder) and Veronica Ouellette. A source of great happiness for Bill during these last years has been his great grandson Lincoln Everett (son of Leonard and Leah).

He will be sadly missed by his sister Janet Horsburgh (late James) of Scotland. Predeceased by his parents the late Francis Costello and the late Elizabeth Burt, brother John Costello (late Doris), and sister Elizabeth Jackson (Rod), all from Scotland.

Bill was a former member of the British Metropolitan Police Force, a MP with the Canadian Military (Greenwood NS), a constable with the OPP (Long Sault) and eventually a Deputy Sheriff with the Three United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Bill was always in service to his country and his community. A lover of the poets, golf, soccer, tenors, gathering of friends, a good sing-song and scotch of any kind, Bill was always first a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many.

Bill’s life was full and rich. His final year was supported by the amazing staff of the Glen Stor Dun Lodge who cared for Bill in the most exceptional ways. The Lodge was a second family of love and support for Bill. Their care and commitment will always be cherished by wife Myra and daughters Katrina and Pauline. A special thanks to the nurses and PSWs who cared for Bill in his last days; Kathy Monpetit, Chelsea Pecore, Brianna Fentiman-Jones, Annette, Katie, Amy, Meghan and many others. Thanks also to Craig Smith, Geriatric Assessor and Elder Mediator at CCAC, Dr. Cook and staff, and Dr. Patel and Nurse Practitioner, Mona Mallion.

Cremation. Funeral arrangements under the care and direction of LAHAIE AND SULLIVAN CORNWALL FUNERAL HOMES, WEST BRANCH, 20 Seventh St West (613-932-8482). As expressions of sympathy memorial donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Canada, the Alzhiemer Society or the Glen Stor Dun Lodge would be greatly appreciated by the family. My deepest sympathies to the family. I have fond memories of Bill dating back to my teenage years when he took time to coach the Avonmore Pacers. Always easy going with words of wisdom that we probably didn’t realize at the time. God Bless my friend.

Bill – you were a great man on so many levels. I was fortunate to come into your orbit as a member of the Avonmore Pacers soccer team. You taught us so much. Mostly about life and the importance of enjoying the journey. You were a cherished mentor.
I have a big smile on my face and a tear in my eye as the thoughts flow – another lesson in appreciating life and to always be respectful of the moment and people associated. Thank you.
You will be missed, and your memory will live on in our spirits.
