

Bruce Patrick Newbery, 87 years old passed away on 6/16/15 peacefully at home. Born in Sierra Madre, CA to Gretchen and Robert Newbery, he was a tumbler in high school and enjoyed swimming and walking into the San Gabriel Mountains to fish. He was also very involved with the Boy Scouts.
In 1944 Bruce joined the Navy where he spent most of his time in the Marshall Islands and Bikini Atoll. He was an electrician mate and participated in atomic bomb testing. While in the Navy he was also awarded his Eagle Scout which is the highest award given by the Boys Scouts. He was honorably discharged in 1948 and started working for the Pacific Bell Telephone Company where he retired 37 years later. In 1949 he met the love of his life, Valerie Jean Valencia and they married 1 year later. They made their home in Costa Mesa and had 2 wonderful boys, Bruce Jr. (Skip) and Ken. They were married for 36 years until Valerie lost her battle with cancer in 1986. After losing Valerie, Bruce filled his time with Wood Carving, Medal detecting, and Fishing but his most favorite thing to do was going to breakfast with his buddies at Norms and Pasta Connection.
Bruce is preceded in life by Skip, his son, Valerie his wife, and his two brothers, Robert Jr. and Bill. He is survived by his son Ken and daughter in-law Carrie, grandsons KJ and Ian, nephew Rick and niece Debbie.
Services will be held on July 17th at 10:00 am at Pacific View Memorial Park. Burial will be directly after. For more information go to pacificview.us. Family requests no flowers but a donation to the American Cancer Society may be made in Bruce’s name.
