I knew the young, carefree David at Redmond High School. After reading through the other comments, it seems like he never changed. Fun, caring, thoughtful, good guy! I am thankful he continued to have such a fun life and touched so many people. 
He will be missed by so many! Prayers for his family. 

David was a customer of mine. And he became my friend. One of the most upbeat people I ever met; and through his illnesses, his attitude was both amazing and  inspirational. The cup was always at least half full. 

I remember how happy he was  when he met his wife-to-be Natalie,..and he was such a proud papa to his two girls. Sydona and Cassidy were blessed to have such a great father. 

David, I will miss you, my friend.  I hope you have nothing but front row seats to the best rock concerts in heaven. Love you, pal. 

When I remember "Kona" Dave, I remember a quirky, funny guy that made everyone laugh. We used to ride with Team Basso and our annual Turkey Rides up Maple Springs always ended with most people tired and heading back down after donuts and coffee. Not Kona. He always continued to Motorway or the Peak, things that I could not conceive riding until years later. He was always my inspiration and even though I have lost touch over the years, I will always remember him fondly and I will dearly miss  him. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.  Rest in Peace.

Kona, I miss you. You were one of the first people I met on the trail after I moved to California. We shared many rides over the years, some were brutal, some were long, some were cold, but all were fun.  Kona, as I always called him, showed up out of nowhere a lot of times, and often I did not know where he came from since there did not seem to be anything close to a rideable trail in the vicinity. He made his own trails and rode on bikes that others wouldn't dare to set foot on when his "real" mountain bike got stolen. He still rode the same technical trails on this substitute bike. It's not about the bike, but always about the rider and their skills. His laugh was so contagious, and even though, I have been out of touch, I can still hear it.   The picture was taken at the first and only Tinman race I ever participated in, and Kona won the Tinman race that year. Rumor has it that a spider lives in the crack of the tin cup that we had to drink through.  I am so sorry and hope that his family can find comfort in what he brought to this world. 

I was introduced to David “Kona” and Natalie through my partner, Geof Sanberg. Natalie was due to have Sydona in a couple of weeks, and l was struck by her fiery attitude and David’s calming presence. Over the years, Geof and I were lucky enough to be a part of their little family’s life and enjoy RVing, mountain biking and hanging out together. I am saddened that Kona left us all too soon, but the love I witnessed today at his service reminds me of the impact one person can have on so many. Even warriors get tired, so rest well, my friend, you will be missed.

It has been some time since I last saw David – late 2016 actually.  We were work colleagues and since I am based in Ohio, our opportunities to get together revolved around business trips.  David, another colleague and I were in Colorado to visit a customer and we had a some time in the afternoon to do a little hiking around Durango.   I don't think that David was at 100%, but you couldn't tell by the way he carried himself and the banter we exchanged.  We had a nice time that day and this is the way  that I'll remember him.  Thoughts and prayers are with David and his family.


Yes, I also became friends with Kona on the trails and our annual Tinman; but it was the past year that I really got to know this amazing man. We would meet regularly over lunch and talk about his battle and his love for his children and Natalie. He would say “ I want to be with my children and watch them grow. I am going to keep on the trail with my bike and my life and fight this.” While climbing Cholla in Tinman 2017,  I heard Kona coming up my tail and while on a fresh and harsh load of recent chemo streaming through his body, he says to me.... “ come on Heine, you can do this” as he passed me going to the top.  His drive to be a good man and dad kept him here with us in overtime. If I could say one thing to his daughters it would be... always look up and listen to your dad. You can ask him anything, and simply listen. He willl always be there for you.

I wish I had a picture of Kona preparing for our Grand Canyon hike with a 5 gallon water jug in his backpack. Oct 2003 we hiked the Grand Canyon and stayed at Phantom Ranch.  I am so grateful to have had such a friend.

I met David, lovingly known as “Kona” in our mountain biking family, over nine years ago on the dirt trails. I admired his endless energy and enthusiasm for the sport. He led rides that came to be known as “The Kona Sufferfests”, long, punishing, and grueling . Ohhh my...but they were so so much “fun”!! Friends coming together and spending long hours on the saddle and taking in the outdoors properly, on bikes! All the while Kona leading the charge.  You will be greatly missed on and off the trails my dear friend. Much peace and love.

DSG was a good friend - and he was taken from his family at far too young an age!  David & I often spent time away from work enjoying the game of golf -- some would probably say "too much", perhaps!  
RIP, brother!  You are missed!
