Richard “Dick” Ortwein, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, naval officer, and business and community leader passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, in Newport Beach at the age of 84 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, to Marvin and Marie Ortwein, Dick was raised alongside his sister, Joanne, and carried with him the strong values of faith, family, and service throughout his life.
Dick proudly graduated from the United States Naval Academy in June 1963 and went on to serve with distinction in the U.S. Navy, completing three tours of duty during the Vietnam War aboard the destroyer USS Ingersoll. While stationed in San Diego, he met his future wife, Sheila, and the two were married in 1969. Their marriage of 56 years was built on love, respect, and a commitment to family and community.
Following his military service, Dick transitioned to the commercial real estate industry where he became a respected and influential leader in Southern California. He served as president of the Koll Development Company, and cofounder and partner of Focus Real Estate. Dick played a key role in shaping the region’s real estate development landscape with vision and excellence, earning a reputation as a thoughtful and ethical leader.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dick was deeply committed to giving back. He was an active force in healthcare philanthropy serving as president of the Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and as both a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Board for Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach. During his tenure, Dick oversaw major expansions of the hospital’s facilities, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
Dick also shared his knowledge and experience with future generations as an adjunct professor in the Master of Real Estate Development program at the University of Southern California. He was a mentor to many, known for his unwavering integrity, thoughtful guidance, and esteemed reputation.
In his personal life, Dick was known for his warmth, loyalty, and sense of humor. He cherished spending time with his family, especially their many trips together. Dick often said, “Life is a collection of experiences,” and he lived by that belief — always encouraging others to try new things and embrace the unfamiliar. He shared that spirit with his family through countless adventures across the United States and abroad, creating lasting memories and a legacy of curiosity and joy.
He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Sheila, and his children: Stephanie (Paul), Michael (Ashley), David (Cynthia), and Brian (Kathryn). His legacy lives on in his treasured grandchildren — Lawson, Kathryn, Caden, Charley, Liam, Wesley and Evan. His integrity, kindness, and commitment to others will continue to live on in the lives he touched.
