Robert Walter Bein, a remarkable man whose life was marked by dedication, leadership, and unwavering love, passed away on February 17, 2024, in Newport Beach, California. Born on September 13, 1933, in the vibrant City of Chicago, Illinois, Bob’s journey was one of resilience, achievement, and enduring connections.
Predeceased by his beloved family members, mother: Gertrude Bein, father: Walter Bein, sister: Barbara Brumbaugh, and brother: Walter (Bud) Bein.
Bob’s early years were shaped by the aftermath of the Great Depression. Growing up on Chicago’s South Side, he discovered a passion for sports and literature while delivering newspapers along Route 365. His determination and curiosity led him to the University of Illinois, where he was affectionately dubbed the “cutest freshie.”
In 1953, fate intervened when Bob met Ruth, the love of his life, at a military ball. Their relationship blossomed into a lifelong partnership spanning over 70 years. Bob’s commitment extended beyond their marriage; he served in the Navy ROTC, achieving the rank of Lieutenant JG during his deployment in the Mediterranean. After an honorable discharge, Bob and Ruth embarked on a new chapter in sunny California. Bob’s engineering skills found a home with the County of Los Angeles as an entry level Civil Engineer. Eventually, they settled in Corona del Mar, Orange County, creating a home filled with love and memories where they still live today.
Bob’s professional life led him to the Irvine Company and later to a small survey firm that became RBF. His vision and leadership transformed RBF into a thriving company of 1100 employees, excelling in engineering, planning, and surveying. His impact extended beyond the workplace, as he assumed leadership roles in prestigious organizations, including as National President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and President of the Consulting Engineers & Land Surveyors of California (CELSOC).
Bob was a man of deep faith and love for Jesus. He expressed this love through every aspect of his life and with everyone he met. At RBF, Bob created the Easter Prayer Breakfast, bringing together hundreds of dignitaries from many denominations and religions, as well as ordinary people from throughout the community each year to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ together.
Beyond work, Bob embraced life’s adventures. He explored the depths of the ocean through his passion for scuba diving, captured moments with his camera above and below water, and savored the world’s finest wines. Even into his 90s, Bob continued to travel, seeking out vineyards and savoring life’s richness with his family.
Robert Walter Bein leaves behind a legacy of excellence, love, and resilience. His memory will forever inspire those who knew him, and his absence will be deeply felt by family, friends, and colleagues alike. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Ruth Bein, his two sons, David and Steven, and four grandchildren.
