Stephen John Fazio passed away on July 5th, 2022 at the age of 83 in Newport Beach, CA. “Steve” suffered a major stroke in July 2021 and fought hard to rehabilitate at his home in Newport Coast, CA. He spent the past year surrounded by his family, and although it was very challenging physically, he never complained and was in great spirits. Sadly, he suffered another major stroke July 1, 2022 which proved to be too hard to survive.
Born in Bronx, New York to Italian immigrants, Bettina Marzigliano and Pasquale Fazio, Steve was predeceased by his parents and brothers Patrick and Peter. He was raised in the Bronx and graduated from All Hollows High School in 1956 and Manhattan College with honors in 1960, while there he joined the ROTC. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University in 1962 with a major in Psychology. In 1963 he went into the AirForce as a First Lieutenant and retired in 1966 as a Captain. He was stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas.
In 1959, while still in college, he married the love of his life, Mary Durkin. They met while they both worked at Alexander’s Department Store. They recently celebrated their 63rd Anniversary. They had four children and were very active volunteering in their community and church. Stephen was a devoted father and grandfather (“Gramps”). His family was the most important thing in his life. He coached baseball, basketball, softball for his children and attended every event for his children and grandchildren from the circus to baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, ballet, baptisms, communions, and graduations.
Steve worked for IBM for 32 years in Finance, Sales and Planning. He raised his family with Mary in Yorktown Heights, NY. In 1983 he was transferred to Tokyo, Japan and later Sydney, Australia. The family got to travel all over the world because of this opportunity. In 1990 he was transferred to California to run Cadam, a company that was purchased by IBM. The move to California allowed him to be close to his daughter and her new family, as well as his sons who were already living on the West Coast.
After he retired from IBM, Steve went to school to become a very successful Certified Financial Planner. He had a thirst for knowledge, and continued taking educational courses both in school and online. He also taught Computer and Management courses at different colleges both in New York and California.
Steve was an avid sports fan and a die-hard NY Yankee and NY Giants fan. He took all his kids and grandkids to Yankee baseball games and later in his life his kids took him to games. He had a passion for books and enjoyed endless hours of reading. He also loved music and excellent technology. He had a great sense of humor and always made people laugh. He enjoyed a good debate. He will always be remembered for his intelligence, integrity, honesty, generosity, and his love of family.
He is survived by his wife Mary Fazio, daughter Donna Egan (Jack), sons Stephen Jr., Robert and David Fazio (Kristan), his grandchildren Jack, Brendan, Andrew, and Kerilynn Egan, R.J., Rachel, Ryan and Kirra Fazio and four great grandchildren, Jackson, Bryce, Bennett and Sonny Egan.
Services will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 10:00 am at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 9 Hillgate, Irvine, CA, 92612.
