She was raised on a farm in Poth, Texas.
Medora attended Texas A&I University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and obtained a Teaching Certificate. At Texas A& I University, she met WWII Army Veteran Code Reader, George A. von Blücher, Jr., and they married. Medora taught at Driscoll Junior High before starting a family.
Medora and George raised their two sons, Richard and John, in Corpus Christi, often taking their sons on sailing trips to Florida. George and Medora were members of Hermann Sons Texas for over 50 years, a cultural organization for Americans of German descent. Medora was an American Red Cross Volunteer at Spohn Memorial Hospital for 39 years, greeting patients and helping them through the waiting process for their loved ones. She was awarded a medal for volunteering over 14,000 hours at the hospital. Medora collated and collected the letters of Maria von Blücher, wife of Felix von Blücher, who both moved to Corpus Christi from Germany in 1849. Medora was instrumental in having these letters published in Maria von Blücher’s Corpus Christ: Letters from the South Texas Frontier, 1849-1879, Texas A&M University Press, © 2002 by Medora F. Blücher, representing the Charles F.H. von Blücher Family in the United States. Medora was an active advocate of the von Blücher family historical heritage in Corpus Christi.
Medora was a very social person, hosting many meals with her large extended family, meeting with many friends throughout her life, hosting bridge games at her home, and being very active in her community. She lovingly offered homes to a family aunt and both her nieces when they needed it. She frequently traveled to Europe with her husband and cousins.
Her husband, George, and eldest son Richard, passed away within two months of each other when she was 75. She resolutely carried on as an amazing mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother for the next 20 years. She is survived by her beloved son John, her beloved daughter in-laws, Jane Blucher, and Betsy Schramm, and her beloved grandchildren Alex and Isabelle Schramm von Blucher and Sydney and Jonathan von Blucher. She is also survived by her beloved nieces, Betty Woods and Linda Alexander, and their families. Medora Blucher lived a full and happy life, loved playing board games with her family, fed the neighborhood cats, and was always the support for her family with her beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed.
