Michael was born in Bakersfield, California on April 5th, 1969 to parents Donna Mae Rockow and James Mike Harbin. Anyone who knew Michael, knew he was proud to be from the hometown of KoЯn, Adema, Kevin Harvick, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and of course, Arnie’s love child. Michael graduated from Bakersfield High in 1987 and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Peninsula College in 1997. He was married to Stephanie Olson on June 21st, 1991.
Michael spent almost 4 years in the California National Guard Reserves before joining the US Coast Guard active duty in January 1991. What followed was 29 years of lifelong service to his country in the Coast Guard, advancing to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer on January 1st, 2016. Michael started his career in the US Coast Guard at basic training in Cape May, NJ. He continued to advance through his career, serving in Mobile, AL and continuing on to avionics school in Elizabeth City, NC.
He and Stephanie started their family while at their first duty station in Kodiak, AK with the birth of their son, Tyler. Michael and Stephanie then transferred to Air Station Port Angeles, in Port Angeles, WA where they were blessed with their daughter, Madison. After that they transferred to Air Station Opa-Locka in Opa-locka, FL where he was given the opportunity to represent the US Coast Guard at a NASCAR race in Phoenix, AZ. This call to service allowed Michael to meet his favorite NASCAR driver, Kevin Harvick. As Michael continued his service he was stationed at Air Station San Francisco in San Francisco, CA, back to Opa-locka, FL and then finally, to Air Station Corpus Christi here in Corpus Christi, TX. Since becoming a Chief, Michael was an integral member of the Coast Guard Chief's Mess. Michael was the Chief of the Mess here at Sector-Air Station Corpus Christi.
The US Coast Guard was Michael’s greatest passion. He believed in the US Coast Guard mission and truly lived Semper Paratus.
For the past several years Michael has been a friend of Bill W. He worked in the community to help others and his impact was felt in every endeavor he undertook. His other interests included tuning his truck, spending time with his German Shorthaired Pointer dogs, NASCAR (especially Kevin Harvick), and fly fishing. Michael was also a strong study of the English language and valued proper grammar in both spelling and his everyday encounters.
Michael is survived by his wife Stephanie, his children, Tyler and Madison, his sister Julie, and his mother and step-father, Donna and Charles.
A viewing is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27th, 2019 at Memory Gardens Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28th, 2019 at the Coast Guard Sector/Airstation. Both the viewing and funeral service will be open to the public.
