Richard was born on February 27,1943 in San Antonio, Texas, to Richard F. Moorton
and Irene M. Moorton. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, his wife Jeanne, as well as his only sibling, Pamela Rose.
Richard loved fishing and went to great lengths to achieve the optimal catch, even
taking the temperature of the water to decide what type of lure he wanted to use.
Richard Sr. was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army Infantry Division, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received The Purple Heart for his bravery.
The shining examples of his father and his uncle led Richard Jr. to pursue higher learning-- first at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, then going back to Texas to study at the University of Texas at Austin to complete his Doctoral Degree in Classic Literature. He was a voracious reader and had a brilliant mind, so it was a good fit.
While studying in Austin at the University of Texas, Richard met the love of his life, Jeanne Elizabeth Palm, who was also a student there and quite a bit younger than he. They married when he was 39 years old, after Jeanne had earned her Masters Degree.
Richard was a brilliant scholar and authored many published books including several that remain in use as textbooks of choice for various courses in literary arts programs. He established himself as an Associate Professor at Connecticut College in Groton, CT and maintained a successful career there for over 30 years.
In his retired years, Richard and Jeanne volunteered their time and service to local charities and were devoted to caring for sick family members until their own health failed. Richard’s wife, Jeanne, died suddenly in September 2021, and the pain of losing her took such a toll on his health that it eventually led to his death.
Rest peacefully in heaven, Dear Richard, where you will be reunited with Jeanne along with other loved ones. May God have mercy on your soul and welcome you into His Heavenly Kingdom.
Your lifetime of achievements, love of family, and thirst for learning will never be forgotten!!
