Our beautiful, courageous, and gentle mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend fell asleep in death, on Friday, October 6, 2023, surrounded by her cherished loved ones. She was born on April 9, 1938, in Corpus Christi, Texas to Saturnino and Manuela Medina Garcia.
She met the love or her life, Felix, at the age 22 and they were married on November 5, 1961. Mom was devoted to her faith and family and displayed the qualities of a Capable Woman as described at Proverbs 31:25-28
She is clothed with strength and splendor, And she looks to the future with confidence. She opens her mouth in wisdom; The law of kindness is on her tongue. She watches over the activity of her household, And the bread of laziness she does not eat. Her children rise up and declare her happy; Her husband rises up and praises her.
Mom had a heart of gold and she found beauty in everyone. Her loving and generous spirit moved her to share all she had with others. She loved and treasured her family dearly. She found great comfort in Jehovah’s creation, especially when surrounded by flowers and songbirds. Mom was so grateful for life’s blessings which moved her to praise God for every sunrise and sunset and to zealously speak about his holy name, Jehovah.
She lived her life in service to Jehovah and those around her were blessed because of her unfailing love and devotion. She was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her spiritual family. She was first introduced to Bible truths at a young age by sisters preaching in her rural community. She accepted Bible literature and loved what she read and heard. Several years later when married with children, she found herself pouring out her heart to God upon an altar saying: “One day I will know who you truly are.” That same day, she was contacted by an elderly missionary sister, and again loved what she heard about Jehovah. The truth came knocking on her door once more, it was sister Zoila Martinez, and she accepted a Bible study. She continued her study with sister Hortencia Davila and was baptized on April 4, 1971, as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Santos was a member of the Alameda Oaks Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses where she treasured her place in the congregation joyfully attending meetings in person, and later remotely when homebound by illness. Her faithful service spanned 52 years of which she engaged in many different avenues of the ministry—right up to her final days making Jehovah’s name and future Kingdom blessings known to doctors, nurses, hospital roommates, and various medical staff.
Santos Garcia Chavarria is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Felix Chavarria Sr., her father Saturnino Garcia, her mother Manuela Medina, her son Rudy Galvan, her brothers: Fidel, Saturnino Jr., Jesus, and Jose Garcia. Her sisters: Maria Gonzales, Aurora Chavarria, Emilia Galvan, and her half-sister Maria Juarez. She is survived by her youngest brother David (Juanita) Garcia. Her children: son Guadalupe Chavarria, daughter-in-law Connie Chavarria, daughter Aida Bassett, son-in-law Richard Bassett, and son Felix Chavarria Jr. She opened her heart and home to three nephews and a niece whom she loved as her own children: her sons, Rudy (Irene) Galvan, Arturo (Lupita Lopez) Galvan, Ignacio Galvan Jr., and daughter Yvonne Cooper. Her eleven grandchildren are: Aaron (Tiffany) Galvan, Joshua (Veronica) Bassett, Victoria Chavarria, Kristi-Anna Rangel, Julian (Sadie Ellis) Galvan, Chloe (Nathan) Brown, Stephanie Cooper, Jessika (Ray) Rodriguez, Marbella-Soleil Bassett, Aurora Chavarria, and Jared Chavarria. Her fourteen great-grandchildren are: Ava, Noah, Juliette, Zakary, Arhiana, Natahlhia-Sarai, Kattaleya, Astriah, Aaliyah, Adriana, Jessie, Lydia, Ray, and Eli Kingston. She also leaves behind to treasure her memories, various nieces, and nephews.
We embrace the hope she had of the resurrection and long to welcome her back youthful, healthy, and happy on a peaceful paradise earth as promised by Jehovah God in Revelation 21:3, 4.
The Chavarria and Bassett families would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to friends and family for their loving concern, prayers, texts, phone calls, gifts, and visits. We would also like to thank CCFD Paramedics, and Bay Area hospital ER & 3rd floor staff for their compassionate care of our mother. A special thank you to AAdi Home Health & Hospice, especially to mom’s remarkable nurse Karla, Dr. Delia Queensberry, RN Oscar, and liaison Laura who visited mom in the hospital for continued compassionate care at home.
