

On Sunday, January 5, 2025, heavens gates opened to embrace a beautiful angel of God. Sophia Maldonado Hernandez passed away, at the age of 88, quietly surrounded by her loving family and caregivers after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Sophia was born the oldest of six children to Juan G. Maldonado and Lamar C. Maldonado on March 2, 1936, in a small ranch community called La Sejita, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Juan G. Maldonado and Lamar C. Lozano; her loving husband of 42 years, Ramon V. Hernandez; and brothers, Roberto Maldonado and Edwardo Maldonado.
Sophia is survived by her siblings, Niria Hinojosa, Juan Maldonado Jr., and Anita Riojas; children, Tamra Lee Alvarez (Alejandro), Jennifer Jayne Hernandez, Raymond Gerard Hernandez (Anna), and Lupe R. Hernandez; grandchildren, Lu Hernandez (Jillian), Jon Marc Hernandez, Dalma Koko Evans, Erica Davila (Oscar), Heather L. Ramirez (Aaron), and April A. Luna (Margarito); great-grandchildren, Kaylen Hope Hernandez, Jacen Luis Duran, Olivea Rose Davila, Quinn Adriana Evans, Mila Rae Ramirez, and Dax Ryan Ramirez. Honorary children that were so special to Sophia include so many, Jesus Noguez (Betty) and Roxanne Reyes Soliz.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Laura Whitman and her Group Home, where she and Jason showed so much love and compassion for Sophia for the last few years of her life. They loved, cared for, and nurtured mom until the very end. God has a special place for people like them.
Visitation will be held from 5 PM until 9 PM on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, where a Holy Rosary will be recited that same evening at 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 AM on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. Rite of Committal and Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. A Reception Gathering will follow at Memory Gardens Funeral Home Event Room.
