Wendy Lois Greenwood was born August 25, 1952, to Cleveland Townsend Sr. and Ida Mae Oliver, in Schulenburg, Texas. Wendy accepted Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Corpus Christi by the late Rev. Hicks. Wendy had eight brothers (Ernest Lemons Jr., Melvin Lemons, Cleveland Townsend Jr., Charlie, Raymond, Ronnie, Donnie Townsend, and Edward Oliver) and 5 sisters (Ruby Scallion, Shirley Mitchell, Diane Hall (Jimmy), Jacquelyn Oliver, and Janice Henderson). Wendy attended Roy Miller High School and shortly after graduating in 1971, she married Carlanditt (Big Carl) Greenwood, Sr. Wendy moved to Ft. Ord, California with her new husband and it was there, she had her first child, Carlanditt Greenwood, Jr. (Little Carl.) As her husband's military service ended, Wendy and her little family moved back to Corpus Christi where she gave birth to a daughter, Carolyn Mae Perry (LaMarcus), and a son, Jessie Jay Greenwood II.
What can we say about our mother and everybody's friend, Wendy Greenwood? Wendy was a feisty, hardworking, funny lady. Life of the party who loved music and liked to hang out and have a good time. As kids, growing up, we had house parties and Tupperware parties to go to. Playing cards or shaking the groove thang, Wendy was going to keep it "LIVE!"
Coming up, we also spent a lot of time on the corner, at her mother's (our granny) house. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends would come by and help us keep that corner "lit!" Barbecuing, listening to music, and having a good time is how we spent a lot of our time on the weekend with our mother (your friend.)
Everyone loved Wendy. No matter what, when, or where, she was always ready to help or to make a friend - she was everybody's buddy. She was such a good friend and loved so hard- she loved so hard that she would give you the shirt off her back- but at the same time, she was going to tell you the truth and give you a dose of reality! Oh, she was definitely going to "keep it 100" with you!
Wendy worked various jobs around Corpus where she continued to spread love. Levi's Strauss, National Linen Services, Corpus Christi State School, and CCISD were a few of the places our mother was allowed to spread her special kind of joy.
On the way to work one morning, before the sun had come up, Wendy was injured in a car accident. Injuries suffered during the accident led to chronic back issues- this event and other health-related issues began slowing her down, but it didn't stop her from getting around to visiting her family, seeing her friends, or caring for others. Those ailments didn't stop her from "keepin' it live" as she still liked to hang out, mingle, and have fun going out with her friends. Heart problems appear to be the biggest "monkey wrench" in our buddy's time here with us.
In 2017, we thought we were going to lose Wendy to heart failure. She spent approximately a month in a hospital in Houston being monitored and diagnosed. The findings led the doctor to place a pacemaker in our mom so that she might shine her sunshine on us for a little while longer. In those last few years, Wendy managed to keep us all laughing and SMILING as she continued to strive to light up other people's lives while living her own BEST LIFE!
Wendy is survived by her children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers (Edward Oliver and Ronnie Townsend), two sisters Diane (Jimmy) Hall and Janice Henderson, and two stepsisters (Vivian and Eileen Denson) are still with us. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, six brothers (Ernest Lemons, Jr., Melvin Lemons, Charlie, Raymond, Donnie Townsend, and Cleveland Townsend Jr.), and three sisters (Ruby Scallion, Shirley Mitchell, and Jacquelyn Oliver.
