Grandma was always so happy and sweet. Her voice was always so cheerful. When we were kids, she would bring us back the most amazing “flaky” chocolate from England and save us the wishbone from every turkey dinner. I hear voice (with her slight accent) saying “oooh yes, honey” to me whenever I’d ask her if she was happy and the “love you’s, love you all” she would say before hanging up the phone. She can finally be with Grandpa again.

Even though Barbara left Cirencester many years ago I believe she always considered Cirencester as ‘home’. Before she left for America Barbara worked as a telephonist for the General Post Office. I believe the building is still there in Lewis Lane. Contact was extremely difficult in this early days and I know both Barbara and Mum cherished those precious time limited, pre booked, transatlantic telephone calls. Mum managed the journey to American several times, it was an emotional and exciting time for them both.
Barbara will be missed by so many people who knew her non more so than her two remaining brothers. Words cannot express our loss,


She was such a sweet lady. Always giving and always cheery. You will be missed.

When I was young Auntie Barbara used to send us little gifts from America. They seemed very exotic to us! I remember long rolls of cherry flavoured lollipops ( suckers) and a Cleveland Browns T-Shirt. She visited England several times and I have some photographs in my albums to remind me of those times.  In later years she was active on the internet and would often message me. We kept her updated with developments in our family. We will miss her.

Auntie Barbara was my cosmopolitan Auntie, my dad’s younger sister. As a child I excitedly anticipated Auntie Barbara’s visits to England to see Nanny and to hear Nanny tell us about her trips to America arranged often with the help of the Brides Association. Nanny told me that John Denver’s ‘Leaving on A Jet Plane’ applied to her. 
As an adult I was fortunate to visit the States with my family and the high light of our visit was our trip to Fresno to see Auntie Barbara and to meet my American family. We felt so welcome.

Barbara was my best friend, we lived on the same estate in Cirencester and went to the same school.
We attended each other’s wedding  .
When she left for the USA we promised to keep in touch and we did.
We had many conversations and always met up when she came home to visit her Family.
She gave me a silver necklace which I never take off.
She died on my birthday so it will always be a sad memory.
I have kept in touch with Sue who let me know how she was.
