She was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Coshocton to the late Lewis R. and Clarice D. (Wheeler) Gaumer.
A 1943 graduate of Coshocton High School, she was employed at the First National Bank of Coshocton (now National City) from just prior to graduation until November, 1951. From November 1952, until April, 1954, she worked in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio National Bank of Columbus in the Trust Department. From 1954 to 1978 she assisted her late husband (Dr. John Giffen Butler) in his veterinary practice (Butler Small Animal Clinic on Otsego Avenue in Coshocton). In 1979 John & Kate moved from Coshocton, Ohio to Gaithersburg, Maryland when John took a position with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, Center for Veterinary Medicine. In 1993 they returned to Coshocton in retirement to reside on Eagle Drive.
On September 8, 1950 Kathryn married John Giffen Butler, who passed away December 5, 1996.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Coshocton, Ohio, and the American Veterinary Medicine Association Auxiliary; Ohio Veterinary Medicine Association Auxiliary; D. C. Veterinary Medicine Association Auxiliary.
Kate enjoyed travel with her husband, John, and her three sons, and visited in her life much of the United States from Maine to California, Washington state to Florida, as well as Hawaii and Canada. Kate had many close, lifelong friends in Coshocton, who enjoyed getting together for card club. An excellent cook, Kate’s home-style recipes survive her in the kitchens and memories of her children and grandchildren. Kate enjoyed life, and brought joy and happiness to those around her.
Kathryn is survived by sons and daughters-in-law: Rhett Giffen and Kim Marie Butler of Honolulu, Hawaii, Scott Edward and Sallie Butler of Topsfield, Massachusetts, and Frank Wyatt and Robin Butler of New Berlin, Wisconsin; six grandchildren: Marika Bertram of Washington, DC, Elyse Mallams of Honolulu, Hawaii; Alison Smead of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, Warren Butler of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Colin Butler of Germantown, Wisconsin and Byron Butler of Iowa City, Iowa; five great-grand children: Conor and Camryn Smead, Benton and Aurelia Bertram and Sunny Mallams; several nieces, nephews and a cousin; several grand nieces and nephews; and several great-grand nieces and nephews.
Kate had an older sister, Lois Marilyn (Gaumer) Slaughter and a younger brother, Lewis Edward Gaumer, both now deceased.
Since Fall 2003 Kate has resided in Coshocton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2018, at the Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home in Coshocton, Ohio with the Evangelist Lloyd Tenney officiating. Burial will be at Giffen Cemetery in New Castle, US Route 36, Coshocton County. The service will be a joint one with the cremains of her beloved husband, John Giffen Butler.
Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home in Coshocton.
