

A funeral service for David will be held Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Harbor Lawn-Mt. Olive Memorial Park & Mortuary, 1625 Gisler Ave, Costa Mesa, California 92626, followed by a burial at 2:00 PM.
David Lee Benowitz, 63, of Seal Beach, California passed away on December 31, 2022. The cause was lung cancer.
David was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 8,1959 in Spohn Hospital. He was the son of Harold and Betty Benowitz of Seal Beach, California; brother to Jerry Benowitz of Las Vegas, and Bob Benowitz of Cartersville. Sandra Benowitz of Las Vegas and Judy Benowitz of Cartersville are David's sisters-in-law. David was predeceased by his parents and his brother Jerry.
He is survived by his wife Maria Celine Campos and longtime companion Naome Ilagan, both residing in Southern California. He is also survived by cousins Bobby Fischer and Jacqueline Wolf of Phoenix, Arizona; Alizah Sandlar of Brooklyn, New York; Daniellah Salario of Chicago, Illinois; Jeffery Hiller of Loveland, Colorado; Denise Hiller Wehrenberg and Eilene Hiller Lammers of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; Michelle Bowdler of Sudbury, Massachusetts; and Judith Kent of Ashtabula, Ohio.
David leaves behind nephews Brian Benowitz of Las Vegas, and Jeffrey Benowitz of Encinitas, California; Brett Benowitz of Venice, California; and nieces Alison Palmer of Encinitas, California; Shayne Benowitz of New York City, and Kristy Benowitz of Miami Beach, Florida.
At an early age David moved with his family to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Several years later they relocated to Orlando, Florida where he graduated from Maitland High School. After graduation, David and his parents moved to Seal Beach, California where he attended Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California.
David grew up listening to the Beatles and other groups that led him to a love of music. He became a musician and singer. He wrote original ballads and played the guitar masterfully. He often performed in the Orange County area. He loved all genres of music. He emulated Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and the Grateful Dead. David fully lived the Woodstock Experience. He attended hundreds of concerts and had an extensive music and memorabilia collection.
David was employed as a preschool Director for Mini-Skool and KinderCare in Cerritos, California. He also worked at the French Center providing care for Alzheimer's patients in Southern California. He cared for his mother during her illness before she passed away in 2010. No one took better care of his mother than David. She was a queen to him. He drove for Uber for a number of years before his illness.
The name David has deep biblical roots and means "beloved." In the Old Testament, David is the second King of Israel. The Star of David is the symbol of Judaism. David Benowitz was King to his family. He has been described as a gentle soul, mother's rock, unique and wonderful, and the cool uncle with a ponytail. We will miss him so much.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, January 12, at 1pm PST at Harbor Lawn / Mt. Olive Memorial Park and Mortuary in Costa Mesa, California.
