Alice was born on August 3rd, 1924 in Rosedale, Manitoba, the fifth of seven siblings. She had an older brother Leonard, older sisters Lorna, Coral and Wilma. Later came younger brothers Bill and Dennis. She moved with her family to Saskatchewan at the age of 3.
After completing high school she and her sister Wilma left home to attend teacher's training in Saskatoon. She began her teaching career in Choiceland, Saskatchewan where she boarded with a fellow teacher, Maimie Hayden. One day Maimies's brother George MacLachlan, on leave from the armed forces came for a visit. George and Alice hit it off rather well and they were married on December 24th 1946. Her sister Wilma and Ken Whitrow were also married in a joint ceremony on the same day.
After George and Alice were wed , they moved to Cecil Lake, British Columbia where she continued her teaching career until her family, two daughters, Sandra and Joyce arrived. George and Alice farmed, raising cattle and crops, for 27 years. She was active in the Women's Institute. She was honored with a life membership to the Women's Institute for her valuable contributions for over 25 years. She was a 4-H leader in the Happy Stitchers sewing club for many years.
Alice and George retired to Penticton, British Columbia in 1974. Alice so greatly enjoyed the fresh cherries that she gained 5 pounds in her first summer. Alice became an active volunteer in Penticton, working in the Penticton hospital gift shop and weighing babies at public health baby clinics. She was active at the senior's centre and an avid lawn bowler.
In 2013, after 39 years in the sunny Okanagan, Alice moved to the Comox Valley Seniors Village where she made many friends, enjoyed her daily exercises and participated in many social activities and outings. Alice formed a special relationship with her great grandaughter Kylie when she and her class vistited the seniors village as part of their education. Alice was a wonderful knitter, making countless sweaters, touques and socks for her family as well for charity.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, George MacLachlan, her sisters Lorna, Coral and Wilma and and her brother Leonard. She is survived by her brothers Bill (Dorothy) Edwards and Dennis (Laurie) Edwards. She has 2 daughters Sandra married to Gary Giesbrecht and Joyce, married to Gerry Zaal, 4 grandchildren Corey Zaal, Chris Giesbrecht, Deanna Zaal and Alex Giesbrecht, and 4 great-grandchildren Kylie, Svea, Carter and Soren.
We will miss you Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma but you have left us with so many great memories we will never forget you.
