After a life well lived, our Carl will be lovingly remembered by those touched by his presence. He was a proud Canadian.
Born in New Westminster, BC on June 27, 1931 to Norwegian parents Annie Johanson and Knut Gjendem.
At the early age of 13, he joined the World War II effort as a member of the Merchant Marines – Merchant Navy and was recently recognized for his service. Leading a life of adventure, he often told stories of his experiences. In 1945 he was a member of
the first Canadian merchant ship to enter Sasebo, Japan while it was still under Marshall law. Carl loved spending those formative years circumnavigating the globe.
He then began a career in the BC forest industry. He was eventually a well-respected plant manager of Vancouver’s BC Forest Products LTD, (Marpole Division). In this role, he participated in various industry and BC Government agencies including North Fraser Harbor Commission, IWA Compensation Board and Industrial Economic Advisory Committee for City of Vancouver. He consulted on many industry projects. Carl was a true pioneering influence on
forest industry standards.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather Wally Johanson, his brother Edmond Gjendem (Gerry), his sister Ebba Fenkerick (Jim) and former wife Alice Gjendem.
He is survived by his sister Nancy Melenchek and many nieces and nephews.
His family includes daughters; Debra Gjendem (John Cameron), Carol Johnson (Jeff), and Susan Gjendem. Proud grandfather to Scott Zwicker-Johnson (Crystal) and Monica Gjendem (Jula Bender). Great-grandfather to Cash and Lynx. Caring step grandfather to Grace, Sean (Leanne) and Alex Cameron, and step-great grandfather to Charlotte and Myra.
Carl married Fran (Davis) Martin and they spent 40 years together. He loved becoming the step-father to daughter Denise Martin (Doug Popovich, his “chosen” son).
In retirement, he continued world travels with Fran and they became regular “snowbirds” to Indio and Puerto Vallarta. They settled at beautiful Gartley Beach and became active in the community. Eventually they moved to “Crystal Shores” in Courtenay. During his final year Carl was a resident of Ocean Front Village “Golden Eye”, where he remained close to home.
The entire family wish to thank the amazing staff on “Golden Eye”, Dr Stacey Hoselton, and Jennifer de Medeiros, NP for their special personalized care of Carl.
There will be a beach gathering on Saturday September 27th, 2025.
