Connie Marie Martin

Connie Marie Martin was known as many things to many people. She was a loved one, a friend, and someone special. To family and friends who knew her best, Connie will be remembered as a very exceptional person.

Connie was born on September 7, 1951 at Canso in Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Robert and Evelyn Smith. Connie grew up in various areas of Nova Scotia finally settling in Spryfield.

Connie was raised with 4 siblings. She had 3 brothers Doug, Bernie and Harry and a sister Theresa. Connie was usually involved in all sorts of activities with her siblings. She and her siblings experienced rivalries typical of a growing family, but they shared many life experiences over the years.

A typical teenager, Connie had a fairly happy high school experience, making that critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. She graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax in 1969. She enjoyed some classes more than others, having favorite subjects and teachers. Her favorite class in high school was English.

Always considered a “good” friend to those she knew, Connie enjoyed a broad group of acquaintances and several very close friends during her lifetime. Later in life, she became friends with many many people because she was so outgoing but in particular Charlene and Donna.

On August 11, 1978 Connie exchanged wedding vows with Dana Martin at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Lazo, BC. Empathic and loyal, Connie was committed to making her new family happy.

Connie worked hard to be a good mother to her children and she did her best to fulfill their needs. Connie was blessed with 2 children, Jonathan and Michele. Another blessing for Connie was the 5 wonderful gifts that meant the world to her, Makayla 7, Luke 6, Madalaine and Nora 4, and Sweet little Hannah 4.

Fortunately, Connie enjoyed what she did for a living. Showing a strong work ethic, Connie worked diligently and did her best to succeed in her career. Although she was a trained Home Care Worker, she had many interesting jobs through the years. Her last and perhaps favorite was when she was employed with Quality Foods as a cashier. A job she loved and suited her so well. Connie always sought to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done.

Connie enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Her favorite pursuits were camping, travelling and walking her dog Mimzy. She was content to enjoy her favorite pastimes alone but was also willing to share her interests with others.

Connie enjoyed traveling and time away on vacations. It was a chance for her to renew and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Favorite vacations included Las Vegas, Hawaii and Caribbean Cruises.

Connie was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. One of her favorites was Her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Mimzy. They were best friends for 8 years. Her family was rounded out by Remington as well.

When Connie’s retirement finally arrived in 2016, she was well prepared. Her new life involved staying in Courtenay. In retirement, she found new pleasure in travel and camping. Even in retirement, Connie continued to stay in touch with her old friends while making plenty of new acquaintances.

Connie passed away on July 26, 2021 at home in Courtenay. Connie died from Cancer. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dana, son Jonathan (Kira) of Campbell River, daughter Michele (Marcel) of Petawawa, ON, brothers Douglas Swaine (Jean) of Chilliwack, Bernie Smith (Joyce) of St. Albert, Harry (Sue) of Quesnel and sister Theresa Seguin from Lake Echo, NS, grandchildren Makayla, Luke, Nora, Madelaine, and Hannah and her loving dogs, Mimzy and Remington. Services were held at Piercy's - Mt. Washington Funeral Home.

Simply stated, Connie was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by her family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Connie leaves behind her a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life she touched will always remember Connie Marie Martin.

Connie passed away on July 26 at home in Courtenay with her husband by her side. She was born in Canso, Nova Scotia on Sept 7, 1951.

Connie always referred to herself as a Bluenoser. She followed her airforce husband through many postings including Comox, Baden-Soellingen, Cold Lake, Portage la Prairie, Dartmouth, Victoria and finally back to the Comox Valley. In the valley, Connie had several interesting jobs and her favorite was as a cashier at Quality Foods Courtenay. This job suited her well as she was such a pleasant person, always smiling and willing to take the time to talk.

Connie loved to travel and go on cruises and went on several trips over the years. When at home she loved to spend time with her dog Mimzy, and take her for walks. Most of our walks around the neighbourhood took quite a while as we stopped and visited with friends. She loved all little children and had a special talent to make them smile just by talking to them. Her greatest joy for sure was her five grandchildren. She enjoyed nothing better than just watching them at play.

Even through sickness, she had a positive outlook on life and her smile warmed the hearts of many. Connie's husband would like to thank his family, our great friends, our wonderful Dr. and the many nurses and home care workers that kept her comfortable.

She was predeceased by her father, Robert L Smith and her mother Evelyn Smith and brother-in-law Joseph (Ron) Segiun.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dana, son Jonathan (Kira) of Campbell River, daughter Michele (Marcel) of Petawawa, ON, brothers Douglas Swaine (Jean) of Chilliwack, Bernie Smith (Joyce) of St. Albert, Harry (Sue) of Quesnel and sister Theresa Seguin from Lake Echo, NS, grandchildren Makayla, Luke, Nora, Madelaine, and Hannah and her loving dogs, Mimzy and Remington.

A Celebration of life will be held on Aug 9th at 1pm at Piercy's Mt. Washington Funeral Home.
