Doris was born in Vancouver and raised in Nanaimo, to Adele and William Herbert. She started her family in Mahatta River before settling in Courtenay, BC, where she raised her three children and built a warm, lively home full of love.
Doris was known for her outgoing, social, and fun-loving nature. Hardworking and tenacious, she brought a vibrant energy into every room she entered. She spent many dedicated years working for the Ministry of Children and Family Development, where her kindness and steady presence touched countless lives.
Her passions reflected her zest for life. Doris loved being out in the world—hiking, gathering with friends, and staying active in the sports communities she cherished. For many years she was deeply involved in baseball and slow pitch, later finding joy in golf and pickleball.
Doris is predeceased by her mother Adele, father William, her brother Marvin (Susie), half-brothers Bill (Diane), Jim and Don and her beloved daughter Carey Leanne Frain. She is survived by her sons Bryan (Angela) and Darren, and by her cherished grandchildren Connor, Nolan, Audrey, Maddy, and Evelyn. She also leaves behind her sisters Bev (Ken) and Marlene (Dick), half siblings Ken (Marian), Audrey, Marie, along with many extended family members and friends – including her devoted friend Nora (Bill), who will all miss her dearly.
Doris will be remembered for her unwavering resilience, her love of life, and the strength with which she faced every challenge. Diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis 13 years ago, she was blessed to receive a life-saving lung transplant—an extraordinary gift that gave her six more precious years with her treasured grandchildren, years filled with milestones that she embraced wholeheartedly.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to BC Transplant in Vancouver through the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, whose expertise and compassion gave Doris the gift of more time and more memories.
