Fred was born in Vancouver, BC on November 30, 1935 to Dave and Margaret Williams. He was the second of 5 children; brother to Bob, Marilyn (Lehman), David and Donnie. Fred joined the Reserves in 1952 for a few years, then eventually joined the Air Force full-time in 1959. In 1962, he married Helen Margaret Reeve of Winnipeg, and had a son, Mark, in 1969.
Captain Williams was a navigator in the Air Force until his retirement in 1991. His career gave him and his family the opportunity to live all over Canada and even in West Germany in the 1970’s. In 1991, Fred and Helen retired in Courtenay where they were stationed for a time in the late 1960’s. They enjoyed being part of the tight-knit military community in the Comox Valley, and spent much time at the Wing or the Officer’s Mess. They also felt fortunate to have wonderful neighbours to rely upon. Family was also important to Fred, making many trips to the Mainland to spend time with them.
Fred was an avid golfer, scoring no less than 9 hole-in-ones during his retirement, much to the envy of his son, Mark. He also enjoyed playing bridge with friends at the Wing. Beer, espionage novels, crime shows, musicals and sudoku were some of his favoured hobbies and interests.
Those who knew Fred will remember him as a friendly, good-natured person with a big smile and even bigger voice. He always had a funny story to tell with his dry sense of humour.
Fred leaves behind his son Mark (Lydia) as well as a large extended family in Vancouver and Vancouver Island. He was predeceased by his wife Helen, his brother Bob and his sister Marilyn.
A Poppy Ceremony and Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 13th at the 888 (Stocky Edwards) Wing, 1298 Military Row, Comox, BC.
