Jack Dayton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and educator, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on February 28th, 2024. He was born on December 12th, 1931, in St. Johns, NB, to Elsie and John Dayton. Prior to settling in Victoria, Jack grew up in the Maritimes, Ontario, and Alberta.
Jack was a lifelong learner, holding degrees from McMaster University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Victoria. His passion for knowledge encompassed classical music, geography, history, world religions, and philosophy. Jack's thirst for learning was matched only by his dedication to teaching and promoting education. He was a gifted educator and administrator, known for his advocacy for students and his support for the arts.
During his time touring with the McMaster University barbershop quartet, Jack fell in love with the natural beauty of Vancouver Island and, soon after, with his beloved wife, Donna. Jack and Donna shared over 70 years together, filled with a love of teaching, summers in Qualicum Bay, and adventures exploring more than 40 countries.
Jack will be fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his passion for music, and his avid curiosity for the world around him. His legacy of love, learning, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew him. He leaves behind his wife Donna, children Shannon (Ken), Brent (Sharon) and Mark, as well as eight grandchildren.
A family celebration of Jack's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson Canada or a charity of your choice.
Jack's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and remembered with love.
