Marg was born in 1934 in Sion, Alberta, and raised on the family farm near Busby, Alberta. After graduating high school and attending college, she moved to Vancouver to work as a legal secretary. She met her future husband Jim Bridges on a train from Edmonton to Vancouver in 1958, and they married later that year. Marg and Jim had three sons (Terry, Cliff, and Jay) and lived in various locations across Canada, due to Jim’s work with the Canadian Armed Forces. Marg and Jim retired to Comox in 1981, and Marg lived in the same house for the next 40 years, finally moving to independent living after Jim’s death in 2020.
In Comox, Marg worked at a corner store and bakery, gardened, and enjoyed spending time with her family–especially her grandchildren. Lunches out with family were also a highlight for her. Marg and Jim made several trips to Australia to see Jim’s family, and to the UK to see friends and explore where Marg’s father grew up in Scotland. Marg’s sons have fond memories of staying with Marg and Jim in Comox. For many years, Marg canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. She was also a great walker, covering many miles over the years, especially with her wonderful friend Jean. She regularly fought a losing battle with Comox deer, who regularly raided her garden.
We will remember Marg for her kindness and compassion, her thoughtfulness, selflessness, sense of humour, commitment to her friends and family, and her Scottish frugality.
Marg is survived by her sons Terry (Dale), Cliff (Karen), and Jay (Christine), her five grandchildren (Colin, Chris, Natalie, Kylie, and Isabelle), many nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Elizabeth Donald. She was predeceased by her parents George and Molly, her brothers Rae and Ed, and her sister Isabel.
"We are grateful to the staff at North Island Hospital and Ocean Front Village for their kindness and for taking such good care of Marg in her last few weeks. Donations in her memory can be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Cancer Society."
