Nadine passed away peacefully at her home in Cumberland, BC on August 31, 2025. She was born in Cumberland to a large family, the fourth child and oldest girl, and grew up in Minto (Happy Valley). She loved to regale us with stories of growing up with her seven siblings and the hijinks of her youth.
When she left school, she went to work as a telephone operator in Cumberland and while at a dance in Union Bay, she met her first husband Bill Kennedy, an airman stationed at CFB Comox. They married in 1955 and left the Valley for Ontario and finally settled in Burnaby, BC. They had two children, Colleen and David, and divorced in 1967. Nadine returned to Cumberland (the place she loved) and a few years later she met her match and married Bob Banks.
Nade and Bob loved to spend time with family and friends, travelling, camping and tending a big garden. Until Bob’s passing in 2014, their social life was active with the Cumberland Fire Department and the Cumberland Legion.
Nadine was force to be reckoned with and she took being matriarch of the family to whole new level. She was a fiercely devoted mother, an “all hands on deck” grandma and great-grandma, a much loved “Auntie Sis” and a loved and respected “Nannie Banks” to hordes of extended family and friends. If she was in your life, she was your biggest fan and would never be afraid to tell you the truth.
Nadine was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ellen Pearse, husbands Bill Kennedy and Bob Banks, brothers Ben, Roy, Gordon, Norman Pearse and sister Doris Slaughter. She is survived by children Colleen (Tim) and David (Lori), by Bob’s children Roberta, John (Susan) and Valerie, her brother Lorne Pearse (Maureen) and sister Phyllis Logan. She also leaves in sadness her much loved grandchildren Michael, Kelly, Rachel, Christie and Melissa, their spouses, eleven great-grandchildren, and many members of the large Pearse and Banks families. Her passing has left a huge hole in our lives.
The family thanks Jaime Fortier, NP, the VIHA staff and Home Support workers, and Mom’s Centennial Square neighbors and staff for their care and concern for our mom over past few years.
At Nadine’s request, there will be no service. There will be a gathering at a later date to celebrate her life.
