Born in Comox on August 20, 1943, to Bill and Myrtle McKay, Roy was raised in Union Bay, where he was surrounded by a large and close-knit extended family. From a young age, he developed a love for the outdoors, spending countless days camping, fishing, and hunting
Roy had a deep passion for cars, which inspired his career as a heavy-duty mechanic. His work took him across British Columbia, including many years along the west coast of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Roy had a lifelong love of baseball and played at a high level well into adulthood. He was a fierce supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays. His playing career was unfortunately cut short due to an accident that resulted in the loss of a leg—an event that would have discouraged many, but Roy faced the challenge with courage and resilience.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Christine McKay; daughters Arlene (Peter) Vogel, Colleen (Shane) Hogg, Catherine (Shawn) Emmerson, grandchildren Devin (Kaila), Rebecca (Bryce) Connor, Ashley, and Tyler, Tasha (Lucas) and Mckenna; four great-grandchildren. He is also remembered fondly by his sister, Doreen Ellis (Steve), and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roy was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Myrtle McKay, and his younger brother, Glen McKay.
Roy will be remembered for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched
A Celebration of Life will occur at the Union Bay Community Hall Sat October 11, 1pm. In lieu of flowers please make a donation the BC Cancer Society
