Wow, it is so nice to hear all of these memories from near and far about our Uncle Gerry (as we called him). He truly was larger than life and filled a room with his passionate beliefs. We, a family of all girls certainly found it entertaining to spend time with that brood of boys and Uncle Gerry at the helm. We loved and still love his first wife Tina and were so grateful that he found love again with such a beautiful woman and partner in Chato who supported him with love to his last day. He would pull strings whenever we went to Cuba to ensure that we got the first class treatment that he was so proud of. Like him, we truly enjoyed the culture and people there. My mom is the last living member of that family of 5 that immigrated to Canada in 1952. Uncle Gerry will be missed by all of us and we truly hope that your heart will heal Chato. Hold all those wonderful memories near to your heart. Our sympathy also goes to Brad, Ray and Deems our "boy" cousins. We look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Our family have so many happy and often hilarious memories of Gerrit, our larger than life cousin.
And yet for me, it was a time of sorrow that I remember most, when he crossed the pond to Scotland and with his big heart and kindness made me smile again, that will live with me forever.
A big man with a big heart has left us with great sadness but with lots of lovely memories. Thanks for the memories.
And our wish for you dear Chato is that with time all your lovely memories of Gerrit will one day make you smile and laugh again.
Our thoughts are with you Chato. Don’t be a stranger.
All our love
Annette, Vic, Giulia and Christopher xx

I met Gerrit through his political activism and was immediately impressed by his commitment to social justice, the fights of working people and the need to build a new society. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences and solidarity to his friends and family. Rest in Peace Comrade.

I have known Gerrit for over 60 years. During the 1960's at any NDP fund raising dance held from Newcastle to Pickering you would find Gerrit (Gerry as we called him then). he was passionate about his love for people and saw Socialism as the only way to equality and the end of poverty. We attended many meetings together over the years. I especially enjoyed our lunches and discussions over a "cup of tea". He was very well read and I learned a great deal from him. He will be truly missed. Deepest condolences from Sue, myself and our family to Chato and Family. Rest in Peace Gerrit; thanks for your friendship.

Some years ago Wilma and I met Gerrit and Chato in Cuba. We visited the same hotel. A lovely couple. Gerrit was very much interested in the political developments in The Netherlands since he left. On the beach and in the lobby of the hotel we discussed all. Gerrit was a real causeur who had a strong opinion. However Cuba is a long flight from the Netherlands we went a second time and then Gerrit and Chato surprised us completely by appearing on the beach. Again we had a nice time. Chato and Gerrit were the best company we could have. Knowing not meeting Gerrit again makes us sad. A strong man passed away. Rest In Peace dear Gerrit.

Where to begin...
With tears and a smile, we remember the thirty-three years spent living next door to Gerrit and Chato. It was a rare day that we didn’t share time together... sometimes a few minutes, sometimes several hours, lunches, dinners and even trips to the cottage together. I can remember Gerrit and Steve and their friendly bickering over a coffee, or a “cup of tea”. Someone listening would think they were enemies, when in fact they were great friends and neighbours. Gerrit had a sense of humour that kept us on our toes. There was little we didn’t talk about. We couldn’t ask for better neighbours. Neighbours that became friends, friends that became family. We will miss Gerrit and are thankful for the many many years of wonderful memories to cherish. Chato, you are in our thoughts and have our deepest sympathies. We will continue to stand alongside you, as you are part of our family. xo
