She attended and graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles in 1946. While there, she joined many clubs and had lots of friends. She attended Vermont Avenue Presbyterian Church. Through the youth group at the church, she met her husband-to-be. Donald Ingwerson. They married in September of 1947.
Phoebe and Don moved to Huntington Park and had their first child, Julie, in 1948. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the Montrose/La Crescenta area, where they’re two boys, Steve and David, were born.
Phoebe worked for many years as a secretary at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Then from 1977 to her retirement in 1994, she worked as an executive secretary at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.
She had a lot of friends from school, work, and “play”. She loved seeing, hanging out, and vacationing with her friends. Phoebe enjoyed sitting out by the pool and working on her tan, going to Hawaii and Arizona, and her annual pre-Christmas visit to Solvang for pastry shopping. She was a great friend and would help out anyone when she knew they needed it.
Phoebe, like all grandmothers, loved her grandchildren Jeff and Amy. She would especially look forward to Christmas each year. Her car would come loaded with gifts and goodies to eat. We would all play tripoly on Xmas Eve, then wake up early to see what Santa had brought. The floor beneath the tree would be filled with gifts! It would take hours to open all of them.
She loved crocheting and reading in her spare time. Phoebe made many beautiful afghans for friends and relatives. After her eyesight got worse, she enjoyed playing bingo and cards and listening to TV- QVC, food shows, and Everyone Loves Raymond were among her favorites.
According to Roger, her son-in-law, Phoebe was the perfect mother-in-law. She was kind, loving and always knew what to say and when to say it. Last, but not least, “she made the best fried chicken and potato salad imaginable”.
Phoebe spent the last few years of her life residing at Regency Grand Assisted Living Facility in West Covina, and most recently, at Emeritus Skilled Nursing Facility in San Dimas. At both places, she was cared for lovingly by many nurses and care-givers.
