Anita Rachel Haygood Bridges, affectionately known as “Nita,” was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 16, 1938. She passed away peacefully with loved ones surrounding her on April 24, 2021, at the age of 83. Anita was the daughter of the late Reverend Claude M. and Alexina Haygood. She is preceded in death by her son, Brian Bridges, and her two brothers, Gordon and Jim Haygood. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa McCreary, her four grandchildren: Jordan McCreary, Savannah McCreary, Isaac Bridges, Sarah Bridges; and her loving partner of 38 years, Malissa Turner. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the St. Tammany Health System Hospice and the Home Instead team for their kind and gentle care. Anita was a musician and music educator extraordinaire. She taught hundreds of music students in the gifted and talented programs of St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes, and the music majors of Anderson University in South Carolina. She served many churches as organist and/or choir director in Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, and Louisiana. She was also conductor of the Slidell Community Chorus. She held a Bachelor of Music from Samford University, and Master of Sacred Music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at St. Timothy on the North Shore United Methodist Church, 335 Ashbury Drive, Mandeville, LA 70471, on Saturday, May 15, 2021, starting at 10:00am. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to UMCOR or the music program at St. Timothy on the North Shore.
