Don was born on November 22, 1959, in Hayden to Dayton and Lucille Dowling (Ducey). After graduating from high school, he began his career as a heavy equipment operator—a trade he excelled in and took great pride in throughout his life. He first worked at the Yampa Mine until its closure, then continued his career with R.N. Robinson and Son, followed by Precision Excavating. He finished his working years with Moffat County Road and Bridge, retiring in January 2025. Don was especially known for his skill and precision on a motor grader—his craftsmanship left a lasting mark on the roads and communities he served.
In 1988, Don married the love of his life Kammey Norvelle, and together they built a life rooted in family and love. Kammey passed away in 1996, and her memory remained a lasting presence in Don’s life.
Outside of work, Don cherished time spent outdoors. He had a deep love for camping, fishing, and the annual family elk hunt, which brought together generations in tradition and laughter. Family was at the center of his life, and his greatest joy came from being a devoted grandfather to Dutch and Duke. He never missed a school or sporting event, always cheering them on with pride.
Don is survived by his son Dayton and grandsons Dutch and Duke, his daughter DreAnna, his brother Gordon (Sam), brother Delbert (Nina), and sister Nancy (Ron), along with many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kammey and his parents, Dayton and Lucille Dowling.
Don will be remembered for his steady presence, his strong work ethic, his deep connection to the land and his family, and his quiet but unwavering love for those closest to him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you spend a day outdoors in Don’s honor—whether fishing, camping, or simply enjoying the beauty of Colorado he held so dear.
A viewing for Donald will be held Friday, July 18, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at The Grant Mortuary Chapel. A funeral service will occur Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 1:00 PM at The Hayden Congregational Church. Interment will follow in Hayden Cemetery.
