Michael was born on September 17, 1947 in Malone, New York. After graduation in 1965, he married, and to this union Tammy Jane was born. He entered the Army Reserves a combat engineer, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He moved to Phoenix in 1970. Later divorcing, he married the love of his life Jacque (Hume) Malley in 1974. After marrying, they moved to Caon City, Colorado and he began his career in Law Enforement in 1975, first at the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department, before moving to the Canon City Police Department. There, he moved up the ranks, ending his time with CCPD as a Lieutenant in 1989. During his tenure at CCPD, he was certified as a Traffic Accident Investigator, and member of the SWAT team. He built and participated in Safety Town USA, teaching public safety to youth. He also was on the Drug and Alcohol Board of Fremont County for 12 years, and a Trustee of the Elks. During his Canon City years, his children Brent and Julianne were born. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1989. He owned and operated two apartment complexes until 1994. He then obtained his real estate license and worked as a property manager or several years. He then followed his passion for cars and auto sales, where he was recognized by Chrysler as a top salesman. Moving back to Colorado in 2004, after a year in Schwann’s, he joined the Moffat County Sheriff’s Department, serving as a Moffat County Jailer for 5 ½ years. He received Detention Deputy of the Year as Corporal. He retired in 2012 from Law Enforcement. In his retirement, he kept busy with church and community services, delivering meals, picking up food, and cooking. He held Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and other positions.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jacque; children Tammy (Chris) Naslund of Seattle, Brent (Jamie) Malley, and Julianne Malley, both of Craig; Grandchildren Brandon, Tori, Ashleigh and Bri Naslund, Logan, Devon and Autumn Malley; Great-Grandchildren Benjamin and Avery Naslund. He is also survived by 3 sisters and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral mass will be held Friday, January 8, 2021 at 10:30 a.m., at St Michael Catholic Church in Craig, Colorado. Services will also be online at www.nwtriparish.com. There will be a graveside memorial TBD in June. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. Memorial donations may be made to St Michael Catholic Church Soup Kitchen or Knights of Columbus, both in care of Grant Mortuary.
