Zach’s adventurous spirit carried him to his final moments amid the breathtaking landscapes of Dinosaur National Monument—a place that reflected his love for the natural world and its ancient wonders. Born in Aurora, Colorado, Zach spent his early years in Rangely before moving to Craig. From a young age, he embraced competitive swimming, racing with the Rangely Hurricanes, the Craig Sea Sharks, and, in high school, the Moffat County Bulldogs. His dedication made him a four-year state qualifier and helped him forge many lasting friendships. He also enjoyed playing basketball and soccer. Kind-hearted and quick to help, Zach found peace along mountain trails and rivers—often playfully reshaping the flow of small streams. He loved camping with family and friends and sharing stories by the fire. Zach had a playful spirit and loved games, especially Monopoly—of which he owned several editions. He also delighted in movies and music, finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. A diligent worker, he held many roles over the years: fast food, coal mining, landscaping, meat cutting (domestic and wild game), carpentry, general construction, and hotel housekeeping. He was always eager to learn new skills and embrace new experiences. Zach is survived by his parents, Jim and Cindy Vorhies; his beloved sister, Nicole Hickory (Brian); and his nieces, Stella and Eden Hickory. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Gloria Vorhies and William and Virginia Jenkins; uncle Todd Jenkins and his cousin, Traivis Macartney Vorhies. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we take comfort in knowing that Zach lived with passion and purpose. May his memory continue to inspire us, and may he rest in peace amid the timeless beauty he cherished. “Perhaps the stars are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.” He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for nature and community. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Zachary. Your spirit will forever remain in our hearts. Celebration of life will be held at the Center of Craig on Friday, Dec. 5th, 4:00 - 6:00 pm.
