Ella "Jean" Hubbard Woody, 85, of Cross Lanes, ,WV, passed away June 16, 2018 at Broadmore Senior Living in Scott Depot. She was born September 25, 1932 in Montgomery, WV , to Joseph Fletcher Hubbard and Mary Jane (Jones) Hubbard. Jean met the love of her life, Clarence "Woody" Woody, whom she married on November 10th, 1951 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage until his death on June 24, 2017.
Jean graduated from Montgomery High School where she was the head majorette, played the flute and was Homecoming Queen. In her younger years she grew up in a coal town and had many colorful stories to tell. She met her husband at the Company Store where he courted her for a year before she would agree to have lunch with him.
Her priority in life was raising her children. Jean was immensely proud of all four of her children's successes in life. She worked at the Capitol cafeteria where she was honored to serve President Carter and President Ford (she kept his chicken bones!). She enjoyed her in-home day care. She was an excellent cook, especially her secret spaghetti sauce recipe.
Jean was talented at cross-stitch and embroidery, creating beautiful works of art that are cherished by her family. She enjoyed travelling. As a young teenager, she would take trips alone by train to visit her sister in Alexandria, VA every summer. She was known to jump in the car and take off to visit many family members from Tennessee to Chicago. She and Woody even visited her sister Ardith in Turkey! In her later years, she enjoyed watching the hummingbirds come to her feeder.
Aunt Jean, as her dear nieces and nephew (Becky, Linda, and Tom) remember, opened her home to them for special extended summer visits to Charleston where she would treat them as her own children. Family was most important to her.
She delighted in spending time with her grandchildren, from babysitting, to taking them to summer activities, FMC Sportsman Club and showing them unconditional love and affection. Always anxious to hear about their lives as they grew, each of her grandchildren felt loved and important.
Jean was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nitro where she truly enjoyed teaching a women's bible class. Rebecca Little Page Church was dear to her heart. A devout Christian, she loved to read the bible.
She is survived by siblings Raymond (Alene) Hubbard of Charleston, WV and Ardith Nell Ferrell of Turkey; her children, Michael (Debra)Woody of Cross Junction, Virginia, Joe Woody of Lexington, KY, Jeff (Gayle) Woody of Scott Depot, WV and Beverly (Jimmy) Boyd of Dorchester, SC.; grandchildren, Aaron (Kelly) of Greensboro, NC, Amanda (Carl) Williams of Stephens City, VA, Andrew (Melinda) Woody of Plain City, OH , Sarah (Cody)Shelton of Cross Lanes , WV, Olivia Woody and Christian Woody of Scott Depot; great-grandchildren, Kyla and Kloe Woody, Khadijha, Brooke, Christyan, Ryan Williams, Jacob, Owen and Carter Woody, Lilly and Mason Shelton; and her dear dog Sparky.
