October 28, 1928 — May 11, 2026
Gwendolyn Adean Roberts, lovingly known as “Adean,” passed away peacefully at home on May 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She lived a beautiful life filled with faith, kindness, wisdom, and devotion to those she loved.
Born in Sprigg, West Virginia, to Hiram and Pricey Phillips, Adean carried a lifelong love of learning and perseverance. She attended school in Sprigg and later continued her education through Dunbar High School, Garnet Career Center, and West Virginia State College. She was remarkably intelligent, naturally curious, and proudly taught herself trigonometry. Long before technology became common, Adean embraced it with enthusiasm and confidence.
In 1946, she married the love of her life, Harvey Roberts, and together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and strength. Adean devoted many years of service to the State of West Virginia as a payroll clerk before retiring.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. As a faithful member of East Nitro Baptist Church, she found great joy in singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, studying the Bible, and praising the Lord. She especially treasured the Wednesday Bible studies shared in her home with her devoted friends, Sue and Cindy.
Adean will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strong faith, quick mind, and unwavering love for her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose warmth touched generations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Roberts; brothers John, Arnold, Houston, Collie, Marce, and Frank Phillips; and her beloved great-granddaughter, Graycen Hart.
She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: daughters Gail Randolph (Frank) of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Patricia Roberts of Jacksonville, Florida; son Bryan Roberts (Jeanne) of Charleston, West Virginia; sister Mary Williams of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Jeff Oxley (Cassie) of Florida, Jeremy Oxley (Nicole) of Charleston, West Virginia, Craig Oxley (Aubrey) of Florida, Tristan Cavender (Angela) of San Diego, California, Pam Bell of Peru, Indiana, Josh Roberts (Tracy) of Charleston, West Virginia, Keshama Hart (Eric) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Tyler Roberts of Nitro, West Virginia.
Her cherished great-grandchildren include Hunter and Taylor Oxley, Kailee Oxley, Evan and Logan Cavender, Zailee, Sailor, and Scout Roberts, Alyse and Brayden Hart, and Bree, Bethany, and Brayden Bell. She was also blessed with great-great-grandchildren Riley, Hudson, and Nora Bell, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord she loved so dearly.
Celebration of Adean’s life will be 12:00 P.M. Monday, May 18, 2026 at Tyler Mt. Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
