Michael Eugene Keeney, 54, of Scott Depot, passed away quietly in his home on February 12, 2017. He was born February 26, 1962 and was the son of Calvin Eugene Keeney, who preceded him in death, and Patricia Johnson Mitchell, who survives him.
Anyone who met Mike Keeney, knew Mike Keeney. They knew him for his quick wit, his insatiable love for music and, most importantly, his overwhelming compassion for everyone around him.
Mike’s spirit will be carried on by his family which, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Cyndi; his son, Sean; his sisters, Lisa Maurer and Joretta kGrigsby; and his nephews, Richard Dolin and Dayle Maurer and their families.
I can see Mike now….flipping on his disco lights and making his way to his DJ booth in the basement of his home in Scott Depot. He pulls back a cover and reveals his turntables and soundboard and you can feel the music moving through his veins. He always remembered your favorite songs and he always knew what song was #1 on the charts the year you were born. Before you left you’d get a custom CD he made just for you; organized and labeled for your pleasure so you could feel the music too. I like to think Mike is part of the music now.
Mike was not a person you would meet and dismiss. Everyone has a “well, one time Mike….” story. In particular, he was well-known for his love of a good joke and the pranks he played on people. One year, he called Kmart and asked if the family could sing some Christmas carols over the speaker phone. We would all join in and sing until they hung up on us and and we would bust out laughing as soon as the call ended. He once had half of his co-workers at AT & T call off over a train wreck that never occurred. He wasn’t particular about who he pranked. It could be a store clerk, mailman, nurse, you name it, and you bet he’d always find a way to rope others into his shenanigans. He taught us the importance of playing for the sake of having fun.
If you knew Mike Keeney, you knew how much his family meant to him. Nothing was more important to Mike than the happiness of his family. There will be no services at Mike’s request. His family asks that you remember Mike today by saying hello to a stranger and telling them a funny joke, or simply sit down and play some music you know Mike would enjoy.
Mike will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends and many of us will consider February 12, 2017 “the day the music died”.
