Bodie worked for many years cleaning houses for others to help support her family, and was loved and endeared by her employers, who appreciated her hard work and dedication; many of them became personal friends. She also worked for Macke Company at the Union Carbide Technical Center in South Charleston.
As an active member of Union Valley Gospel Tabernacle, she served her church family by helping with Vacation Bible School, church dinners, and her own personal flower ministry, among other activities. She carried on her family’s love of music by singing in the choir, in The Path of Life Trio, and also served as interim song leader for the choir.
Bodie touched the lives of many people through her sweet, caring personality. Many of the neighborhood children called her “Maw Maw.” She shared her faith with others and helped them through difficult times.
Among her favorite things were roses, hummingbirds and butterflies, and swinging on her front porch swing, as well as spending time with her family and visitors.
Preceding Bodie in death were Neuell “Newt” Haynes, her husband of 62 years; son-in-law Steve Dillon; sisters: Marie Sigmund and Mable Simmons; brothers: Harold, Charles, Elisha “Ligi,” and Floyde Holbrook.
Remaining to cherish her memory are sisters: Jannett Cook (Vondie) and Annette Callison; brother Marion Holbrook (Patty); children: Nancy “Kathy” Dillon, Donna Davis (Kenny), and Lynn Harmon (Larry); grandchildren: Stephanie Duncan (Casey), Amy Bruce (Ivan), Brian Dillon (Jenn), and Kippi Harmon; great-grandchildren: Carter and Caroline Duncan, Spencer Derrick, Abby and Elliott Sweeney, Josh Bruce (Jackie), Lindsey Gibson (Bennett), Ellen Bruce, Caroline Bruce, Alex Bruce, Olivia and Roman Shaw, and I. J. Bruce; great-great grandchildren Ava Bias, Jax and Evie Bruce.
A memorial service honoring Bodie’s life will be held on June 21, 2025 at Union Valley Gospel Tabernacle from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. There will be a private graveside service immediately following, officiated by her beloved pastor, Rob Legg.
The family would like to acknowledge the nurses, doctors, and staff of CAMC Memorial for their loving care and compassion for our sweet Bodie.
