Fred proudly served his country during WWII. He married his sweetheart, Jean Bertolini, while on leave after basic training, on December 26, 1943. They enjoyed 77 very happy years together, raising a family of four children after they'd settled in the Bronx and later in Yonkers.
The recipient of a Purple Heart Medal, Fred was first stationed in the tropics of New Guinea. He was later transferred to the 105th Artillery in Mindanao in the Philippines. While his company was laying down rolls of cable wire across the jungle to help maintain US Army radio communications, Fred was wounded by enemy gunfire. After recovering, he was next stationed in Japan to assist with the occupation and reconstruction of that country upon their surrender.
Fred loved to entertain family and friends with his wonderful, and often very funny, stories. Before enjoying a long retirement, he worked as a salesman for a wholesale toy company. He and Jean moved to Croton-on-Hudson, NY, in 2010 to be closer to their children. Fred was a loving, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, to whom family meant everything.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Pippa, his children, Stephen (Rosalie), Pamela (Joseph) Pieroni, Gregory (Catherine), and Gary (Sandra); his grandchildren, Stephen, Jr., Paul, Eric Blank, Sienna, Thomas, Victoria, and Tristan, and his great-grandchildren, Vincent and Anthony.
A short service at the Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, on the morning of February 3rd, will be held for immediate family only in light of Covid-19 restrictions. Interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honor Fred's memory can make a donation in his memory to The American Diabetes Association.
