16 December, 194827 July, 2020

Mary Jane Smiton, born Mary Jane Rapp, once Mary Jane Grabowski, passed away peacefully in her home in Croton on Monday, July 27th.

Mary Jane was born December 16th 1948 to John and Hulda Rapp (nee Slack) in Queens and grew up in Ossining. She moved to Croton in 1971.

MJ held a degree in special education and working with children brought her a lot of joy. She also worked for the Croton-on-Hudson Recreation Department for 25 years. She enjoyed making ceramics and beaded jewelry, cooking, taking care of her plants and playing scrabble. Her life was filled with music, and all who remember her most fondly remember her dancing.

She will be deeply missed by her husband and best friend, Glenn C. Smiton. She is survived by two beloved daughters, Jessica May and Rebecca Grabowski, and an adoring step-son Jeremy Smiton. She also leaves behind a sister, Jo-Ann Murphy, and two grandsons, Liam and Oliver Glynn.

Memorial to be held next year. Those wishing to share memories and condolences to the family may do so at (Carters web address). In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the ACLU.

I'm with you ladies. I woke up thinking I needed to call Mary Jane this weekend and then realized she was gone. It was the anniversary of her passing. I think she was tapping my shoulder.
I miss her so much.

For Jeanne & Annie McCue, I met your mom Fern [and Leo] first around 1978, then shortly after met Ann, then Mary Jane via Briarcliff Congregational Church.

The last I knew from MJ your mom was moving from her senior residence in Yorktown. She's another fantastic woman and I've always been very fond of her. Please send my best to her.

I echo my sister's memories of our childhood living next door to Mary Jane and her family. Even though I was younger, she always included me and I remember so vividly riding to school in her car named Daisy and the passenger door flying open around the curve! Always so many fun times and lots of laughs. The shows were so fun and then we would watch our mom's get up and sing East Side, West Side to conclude the performance.

My sincerest sympathies to Mary Jane's family. Please know she was dearly loved and will be missed by our entire family.

Mary Jane and I lived next door to each other since I was three and she was four. Our mothers were best friends and our fathers drinking buddies. I've known MJ literally all my life. I can't believe she is gone. What a wonderful person from an incredible family.
MJ, myself and my sister used to create plays and musicals that we performed for our parents in her basement. We had SSOOOO much fun!!
MJ also had the coolest car in town....a convertible Hillman in which she generously drove my sister and I to high school. Again SO much fun!!
I have so many great memories of Mary Jane that I will treasure for the rest of my life. She was a wonderful person who was taken from us too soon. I will miss her terribly.

Hi MJ,
So sorry to hear you passed. You passed 1 year and a day past my husband Jerry Stone.
I send my condolences to your family, especially to your husband, who would pick you up after our Mahjong games at Antons. We had such good times there together. I first met you at The Black Cow.
You were always so upbeat and had perfect manners. I adored playing Mahjong with you. You were one classy lady.
Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Glenn, Beck, Jess and Jeremy-

I am so saddened when I think of your loss. MJ was a surrogate mother to me many times over the years, and every time I think of her, I will remember her infectious laugh and her wicked sense of humor. I love you all and my thoughts are with the whole family during this incredibly difficult time.

All my love,

Leah Maguire (Sager)
