Carolyn was born to William and Evelyn Youngs in Ridgewood, New York, where her and her brother Billy were raised. While working as a secretary at US Steel in New York City, she met Malcolm Corner and was smitten by his smile and charismatic personality. After a brief courtship, they married in November of 1965. They moved to Pittsburgh and then settled in Downers Grove, IL, in 1966. Carolyn and Mac raised their three children and multiple pets until his death in 1990. They were married for 24 years and he was the love of her life.
She had many hobbies over the years, sewing, golf, tennis, bridge, dancing, movies and traveling. When the kids were young she would often sew their clothes and make matching outfits for the annual Christmas Card. Her and Mac took several vacations with friends to Australia, Japan, Turkey, Greece, Jamaica, the Caribbean and she continued with her girlfriend several times to Turks and Caicos. Going to a beach was always one of her favorite places. The family vacations generally centered around an RV trip, the closest thing to roughing it a Brooklyn girl would do. Many fond memories and stories came out of those trips.
Holidays were always a big event, with her spoiling friends and family from her many shopping trips to TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and Kohls. Underwear was a staple in your Christmas stocking. Carolyn was a big party planner and the neighborhood parties they hosted were always fun including themes, music, dancing and games. Her party planning skills were passed on to her kids, much to her chagrin. Mrs C, Mom Corner, or Momma C as she would be known, always opened her house to all the kids friends and enjoyed people stopping over to hang out or Friday night pizza parties from Domino’s or Papa Passero’s.
Carolyn worked at Inland real estate for a number of years before retiring. Once retired she enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, taking them on adventures and giving them ice cream for breakfast. She downsized to an apartment, but always missed “home” on Briargate where she lived for 52 years. She slowed down the last several years, but still enjoyed a celebration and socializing with everyone.
Our memories of her will be remembering her full of life, dancing, laughing and her Brooklyn accent. Love you to pieces!!
A celebration of life will be held January 24th from 12pm - 3pm at Shanahan’s in Woodridge. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Morton Arboretum, one of her favorite places to visit.
Carolyn is survived by her children Suzanne (Mike) Madden, Chris (Renee) Corner and Greg Corner; her grandchildren Michaela Madden, Christian Corner, Mackenzie Madden and Caden Corner; and her sister-in-law Diane Youngs.
Predeceased include her husband Malcolm Corner, brother William Youngs and granddaughter Gabrielle Madden.
