

He was born in Joppa on Dec. 22, 1946 to Herbert and Mary Cook Yates. He graduated from Larkin High School in Elgin in 1965.
After graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 3 and one-half years, including duty in Vietnam.
Gary is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda Lindstrom Yates; two sons, Michael Yates and Timothy Yates; his beloved granddaughter, Alexis Yates; his sister-in-law, Jannette Yates; one nephew, Jeremy (Amy) Yates; one niece, Nicole (Eric Klassen) Yates; one aunt, Sharon Lang; two uncles, Jim Yates and Jack Yates; and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal and maternal grandparents; and his younger brother, David Yates.
His family would like him to be remembered for his kind and generous heart, his love and devotion to his family and his love for all animals, especially his special “little buddy”, Cubby McDuff Yates.
A memorial visitation and light lunch will be from 12 to 3pm with military honors at 3pm on Saturday, January 30 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake.
