

“Bernie”, as he was known to everyone, was from a family with deep roots in Virginia. His grandfather, William Jackson Williams, was a doctor for the Confederacy during the Civil War, and practiced as a country doctor in Flint Hill, Virginia. Bernie was born on Woodside Farm in Orlean, Virginia, on October 1, 1928. He is predeceased by two older brothers, Thomas Harold Williams and William Jackson Williams, and his parents, John Catterton and Annie Lou Gore Williams. A lifelong resident of Virginia, he attended Hume Grade School and graduated from Marshall High School in 1947. He attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Dayton, Virginia, for one year then transferred to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he graduated with a bachelor of economics in 1951. His first job out of college was as a clerk at a 5 & 10¢ store in Front Royal, Virginia. He was soon hired as a farm loan officer with the Farm Credit Agency, working out of offices in Fauquier and Loudoun counties from 1952 through 1963. He was briefly employed with the Fairfax County Agricultural Conservation Service from 1964 through 1966. Bernie then began working for Fairfax County as an Engineering Technician, and retired in 1983 after 13 years.
He was a long-time resident of Loudoun County then moved to Bethel Academy in Warrenton in 1986. Bernie lived in the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community for 21 years. He was a lifelong bachelor.
A memorial service will be held at the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community Chapel (CBRC) on Monday, May 20 starting at 10:30 am. The Rev. Sandy Martin will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Bernie requested that memorial contributions be made to the CBRC Benevolent Fund, PO Box 191, Culpeper, VA 22701-0191.
