When I shared my thoughts, I totally missed the fact that Bill was 10 years older than me rather than 6 years.   Age doesn't really matter, I just felt that I should make that correction.   Uncle Bill was always a kid at heart when with the family.  That's another thing I loved about him.

Uncle Bill sure could keep you laughing with his sense of humor. He never was afraid to say what was on his mind.  Tonight at dinner Christopher shared when he was little he LOVED  going to the 321 flea market with his Paw Paw and then they would always stop by to see Uncle Bill and Aunt Betty such a special highlight of his childhood. Christopher shared some of the crazy stories that Uncle Bill would tell him. He was a great man and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cathy, Gary and Mitch and their families. Bill was a wonderful uncle.  I was his oldest niece.  I remember him playing with us after church and lunch on Sunday afternoons.  Many of the cousins were around because Papaw and Mamaw's house was our favorite place to go.   Bill was only 6 years older than me.  Our children later on also played together.  I remember being so thrilled when Bill was in Chapel Hill to  do a reset on a Western Auto Store many years later, when he called me to see if i would have dinner with him.  We had a great time catching up on what was going on in our lives with our children.  My one regret is that i didnt MAKE the time to visit more often after they moved to Dallas.  
You are loved and will be missed by so many of us who grew up with you.

He was my first baseball coach, one of my first bosses and a referee when I played basketball that called me knucklehead when I said hello uncle Bill during jump ball. He was an umpire that I remember being fair but focused on the game, but I do remember him maybe giving me a little wider strike zone one game when I pitched and was a little off that day and needed a strike. He made you work and do your best and that's a good thing. He made us listen, do the right thing and mind our manners and if we didn't, we knew we would hear it and maybe feel it. He's family, He's my Dad's big brother and He's my uncle and I'll miss him. He showed that family was important and he taught us all that. He loved his family and had our back. We'll miss Uncle Bill and Aunt Betty and I pray that  Gary, Cathy and Mitch always remember the good times and know that he loved you all and was proud of you. May God Bless You and Your Families and give you peace during this time of sorrow.

To the entire family:
First, let me express my sincere condolences on the your loss. I have many fond experiences of Mr Shaw(and Betty). He and Betty both,  were some of the kindest and friendliest people I’ve ever met. Needless to say, they left a “lasting” impression. One thing I can honestly say is that they loved their children whole heartedly. I spent a lot of time at their house; you were always welcomed there. I thank GOD for them and their children. Gary, Kathy, and Mitch: your parents were the Best!

I remember family beach trips with Bill and Betty many years ago.  Bill always kept you laughing.  He and my Dad loved to fish on the pier at Kure Beach when we stayed at the Richard Smith house.  Thoughts and prayers for the family.

Bill was as good of a Father in law that I could have had! He helped me and Cathy many times over the last 44 years. I really was blessed to have been a part of his family !!!!!!!

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 301 West Main Street, Dallas, North Carolina 28034.
