Ann Christine Daley McCartin, “Nana”, went to be with the Lord on September 8, 2022, after a lengthy battle with dementia. She is survived by her children Margie McCartin Harris and her husband Neil, Maureen McCartin Schwartz, Michele McCartin Cooke and her husband Alan, Michael McCartin and his wife Leigh Ann, and Matt McCartin and his wife Sidney. Her grandchildren include Daley Bennett, Megan Michelson, Kelly Catalani, Jay Schwartz, Catherine Schwartz, Brian Schwartz, Ellie Schwartz, Meg Cooke Dunlap, Emma Cooke, Sophie Cooke, Ann Cooke, Mary Grace McCartin, Maxwell McCartin, Hollis McCartin and Holden McCartin, as well as 7 great-grandchildren.
Ann was born on November 8, 1936, the oldest child of James and Albertina Daley, in Lima, Ohio. Her family moved to the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, as a little girl and established her lifelong love of the beach and ocean waves, as well as the ability to tap dance in the “Hollywood” era of Shirley Temple. It was there that she obtained her degree in nursing and met the love of her life, Thomas McCartin. Dad and the newspaper world were the driving force that moved our family all over the country, from California to NYC, every few years, but Mom was the glue that held us together! Words that describe her are formidable, fierce protector of the underdog & the disenfranchised, lover of the sick and the tired, selfless, strong work ethic, practical to a fault and compassionate. She was a woman of strong faith and convictions displayed through action, whether by her nursing career and the comforting of patients, her love of infants and strangers, or the legacy she created for all of us. She hated injustice & prejudice of any kind, and…cooking! She loved ice cream, reading books, fireworks, Halloween costumes and being surrounded by the chaos of a large, loving family.
Dementia, in some ways, took our Nana many years ago, but she never lost her compassion for others and her focus on acts of service. The caring staff of The Preston of Park Cities share endless stories of her “making the rounds with them at night and checking on the needs of other residents”. Just 2 weeks ago, on a memory care field trip to get ice cream, Mom left her group to pat the back of an upset young boy, whose head was bowed on his table. Afterwards, his mother gave Mom a big hug and said" thank you"!
A Catholic funeral service to celebrate the life of Ann C. McCartin, will be held on Tuesday, September 13, at 10 am, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home Chapel. Being a lifelong nurse, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ann’s name to The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA). https://www.vnatexas.org/
