A loving and inspiring woman of faith and fortitude, Brenda J. McGary was born on October 5, 1945, in Dallas County, Texas, to her parents, Rosie Smith and Bob McGary, and had four other siblings. She peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with her son Napoleon Nelms (Nick) by her side.
Brenda was a member of Tabernacle of Faith Community Church, where she found strength, comfort, fellowship and most importantly “a spiritual family”. Her faith was a steady presence in her daily walk of life thus providing guidance and peace.
She received her education in the Dallas Independent School District and graduated from Lincoln High School. Her strong ambitions inspired her to further her education by graduating from Bishop College (Bachelor's) and obtaining her Master’s (Education) from East Texas State University. Brenda dedicated more than 40 years to education, serving in various roles including teacher, administrator, counselor, and testing coordinator. Throughout her career, she played a meaningful role in supporting, influencing, and guiding students, which often went beyond the classroom. After her retirement, she continued to volunteer in numerous school districts because of her caring nature.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Napoleon Nelms (Edna); granddaughters, Brittany Nelms, Victoria Nelms, Carla Nelms, Nicolette Nelms, Natalie Nelms, and Chloe Nelms; great-granddaughters, Doria Small and Skylin Tunac; sister, Judy Johnson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Brenda was preceded in death by her daughter, Tammie Nelms; her mother, Rosie McGary; her father, Bob McGary; her sister, Cornelia McGary; her brothers, Darius McGary and David McGary; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
She was a woman of faith who found strength and guidance in God. Her life’s journey leaves behind memories that will be carried forward by those who knew her.
