Charles "Charlie" Frederick Hazzard

Charlie was born to Agnes McShane Hazzard and Charles Frederick Hazzard who were members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and proudly traced their heritage to early colonial days. He began his higher education at the University of Notre Dame where he also competed as a member of their baseball team. A lifelong fan, one of Charlie’s most recent joys was watching his beloved home team, the New York Yankees, play in their latest World Series.

After graduation from Notre Dame in 1965, Charlie received an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania in 1967. It was at Penn that Charlie met the love of his life, Carol Lynn Kushla, who was a student in the nursing program.

Charlie’s career began at the Ford Motor Company in 1967 and continued at Citibank (Citicorp) in 1970. From 1973 through 1983, he served as Vice President Human Resources and Administrative Services at Olin Corporation – Chemical Operations. In 1983, Charlie was recruited by Occidental Petroleum – Chemical Operations (OxyChem) where he served as Executive Vice President, Administration. He served on the Board of Directors at Zale Lipshy University Hospital at UT Southwestern and in 2001 was honored with the Greater DFW YWCA Mentors and Allies Award for supporting a balanced workplace and eliminating glass ceilings and creating better opportunities for women.

In 1996, Charlie joined The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) as a clinical professor of management in the School of Management where he taught, mentored and made a lasting impression on his students. He won the Outstanding Teaching Award from the School of Management in 2010 and he was nominated by undergraduates and honored with the President’s Outstanding Teaching Award in 2011.

Charlie was a voracious reader whose passions also included teaching, mentoring, Yankees baseball, Notre Dame football, and golf. He played golf enthusiastically and relished moments of glory and defeat with equal humor. His greatest passion, however, was spending time with his family and sharing those passions with them.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol; daughter Amanda Rollen and her husband David and grandson Chance; his son Charles (Chuck) Hazzard and wife Christina (Tina), grandson Hudson and granddaughter Harper; and beloved relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will take place at Christ the King Catholic Church (ctkdallas.org), 8017 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75225, on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at Northwood Country Club (northwoodclub.org), 6524 Alpha Road, Dallas, TX 75240.
