Christopher Matthew Tharp Castro, lovingly known as Matt, of Dallas, Texas, left us on April 7, 2025, at the age of 47. Born on March 7, 1978, in Dallas, Matt carried the vibrant soul of his city wherever he went. He graduated from El Centro College with an associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies — a testament to his sharp mind and unwavering sense of justice.
Though trained in law, Matt’s heart led him to a career in healthcare, where he served with compassion and purpose at many different hospitals. But Matt was never defined by just one path — he was a symphony of passions. A proud member of the Oaklawn Band, he didn’t just play music; he lived it, letting melody and rhythm color the world around him. Between working at Friday’s and hosting parties, Matt was the Beaux of the Ball.
Matt was an unapologetic advocate for justice, a true consumer of books, and a storm-chaser at heart, mesmerized by the wild power of extreme weather. He was a force in the kitchen, known to whip up magic as both cook and baker, always ready to explore a new restaurant with the love of his life and partner-in-adventure, his husband Francisco.
And oh, how he loved his cats — feline companions who ruled his heart (and likely his furniture) with purring sovereignty.
Matt’s spirit was a beautiful blend of wit, warmth, and the kind of sass that made people feel seen, loved, and occasionally roasted — all in good fun, of course. The world is a little dimmer without him, but heaven’s got itself a little more sparkle.
On October 22, 2021, Matt married Francisco J. Tharp Castro, his loving husband, best friend and soulmate. Together, they shared a strong bond filled with love, passion and adventure.
Matt is proceeded in death by his Mother Patricia Tharp-Tarter and Grandmother Joyce Wiedower, and several other members of the Tharp family.
Matt is survived by his beloved soulmate and husband, Francisco Tharp Castro; his brother, Joshua Tarter; sister-in-law Krista, and their daughter Adelina; his Aunt Christine Tharp and cousin Casey Birdwell; husband, Chance; daughters, Scarlett, and Vivienne; his Aunt Freda and Uncle Robert Tapp; cousins Angie Coleman and family, Micah Tapp and family, and so many more.
He will be deeply missed by a large extended family and a wide circle of friends who loved him dearly.
A visitation for Matt will be on April 17th from 10am-12pm followed by a celebration of life at 12pm at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home, 10501 Garland Road, Dallas, Texas 75218. Party to follow at 2pm at Birdies Eastside.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt’s memory to the Oaklawn Band; https://www.oaklawnband.org/support.
