Claire Patricia Hurley

February 16, 1931 – March 13, 2024

Our beloved mother, Claire Patricia Hurley of Dallas, Texas passed away in the comfort of her home on March 13, 2024 at the age of 93 years. We rejoice in knowing that she has been reunited with her loving and devoted husband, John (Jack) Hurley, and her precious son, David Cole Hurley.

Claire was born on February 16th, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts to parents Terence B McManus and Elizabeth McCaffrey McManus. Claire is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Joan Condrey, sister; Rita Cunningham, sister; and Terence J McManus, brother.

An accomplished scholar, Claire graduated from the prestigious Girl’s Latin School of Boston where classmates dubbed her, “our lovable pixie” and “doll of the class”. She went on to attend The Teacher’s College of Boston graduating in 1952 and launching a career in education that would span more than three decades.

On February 12, 1955, Claire married John R (Jack) Hurley and the two made the move to Milford, Connecticut where they began to grow their family having their first child, a son named John, late in 1955 followed by daughters Donna and Tracey, son Stephen, daughters Christine and Colleen, and finally son David in 1966.

In 1969, the family moved to Texas where Claire completed a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. From mainstream classrooms, to special needs and gifted programs, Claire’s capacity for recognizing the value of all students and her ability to meet each child where they were, guided her successes in all aspects of teaching. She broke barriers in education becoming one of the first female administrators in her region when she was named the Executive Director of Elementary Education for her large district. Claire’s love of teaching extended beyond the classroom and well past her official retirement. Claire and Jack were regular customers at McClain’s restaurant in Seven Points, Texas where Claire could often be found tutoring staff or their children.

Claire is survived by six of her children including John (Jack) Hurley of Bedford, Texas; Donna Hurley of Dallas, Texas; Tracey Hill of Keller, Texas; Steve Hurley and wife, Tess of Frisco, Texas; Christine (Chrissy) Pollock and husband, Kevin of Mabank, Texas and Colleen Howell of Forney, Texas. Her legacy includes 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Claire’s friends and family will miss her stylish attire, quick wit and strong opinions and we are certain that the heavenly remotes will be set to Wheel of Fortune promptly at 6:30pm each night.
